We may be in denial, but fall is definitely upon us, and nature is clearly giving us a hint that winter is coming. šŸ‚ā„ļø

We’ll definitely miss summer, but I’m trying to be optimistic and there are actually quite a few things to look forward to:

No bugs 🦟🚫
This is a deal breaker! Not being bitten every second when you’re outside means a lot.

The woodstove šŸ”„
It’s time to enjoy the warmth and coziness of a fire when it’s miserable and raining outside, or on those freezing winter nights.

Solitude 🌲
In winter, when the cabin is only accessible by snowmobile, you barely see another person. The feeling of being completely alone in the wild is indescribable.

Northern Lights season ✨
It’s time for the dancing sky again! I’m really looking forward to experiencing it. Still one of the most unreal things I’ve ever seen.

Fun in the snow ā„ļø
Last but not least, and if you’ve watched some of our previous videos, you know we really do know how to have fun in winter!

So maybe winter isn’t so bad after all…

Anything you would add to the list?

Property corners

On one of our hikes, we decided it was time to find all four corners of our property.

We had already found the northwest corner earlier because it is visible from the logging road, but the other three were still a mystery.

We started with the southwest corner, near the lake and closest to the cabin. We had the coordinates and, luckily, found the marker fairly easily, tucked between the rocks near the lake.

Feeling confident, we headed for the southeast corner on the next hike, which is deep in mature forest. We found some beautiful, hundred-year-old cedars and pines, but no sign of a property marker.

But getting there was a discovery in itself. It was our first time in that part of our land since we bought it. It made us realize just how much of our own forest we still haven’t seen or explored.

The last corner we tried was the northeast corner, also the highest point on our property. It was a tough and exhausting hike. Because there had been logging nearby, the area was quite disturbed, and we wondered if the original marker might have been removed or destroyed.

This area is also close to a circular patch of forest that was never cut and is protected. We were told there might be a bald eagle nest somewhere nearby. And that’s where we found the oldest white pine we’ve seen on our property so far, huge, towering and incredibly beautiful.

There are other protected areas nearby too, including the heron rookery and a bat sanctuary near the old mine.

So, we still haven’t found two of our four property markers. But we’re not giving up! We’re already planning another hike, this time with more precise coordinates and a better idea of what these old markers might look like.

It’s amazing to think that after owning this land for several years, there are still parts of our forest we’ve never seen. And that’s one of the things we love most about it.

Enjoying Heron Lake in September

September 2022 brought us a beautiful, sunny and surprisingly hot day. The perfect kind of day to spend by the lake, soaking up the sun and enjoying the last taste of summer.

September 6, 2021. On this day in 2021, our cabin adventure had only just begun. We had walls, windows and a roof, and not much else. But that was enough to move out of the tents and spend our first nights under our own roof that summer.

The cabin was far from finished, and definitely not animal-proofed yet. Can you spot the mouse finishing our dinner and licking the pan?

Inside, we had nothing but camping furniture, inflatable beds and sleeping bags. But we were so incredibly happy to have reached this point in the build. Looking back now, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come.

September can feel like spider-web season. The combination of low morning sun, dew and all those mature webs makes the forest suddenly look full of silvery spider silk.

It can seem like the spiders have suddenly appeared overnight, but they’ve actually been here all summer. Many have been growing and feeding, and by August and September they are much bigger and easier to notice. It’s also the time when many mature spiders become more active as they look for mates.

This European Garden Spider made its web right on our window outside and managed to catch a fly while I was filming.

A few fun facts about these spiders:

šŸ•·ļø The large, beautiful orb webs are usually built by the females. She may sit head-down in the center of the web or hide nearby, keeping one leg connected to a signal line. When prey gets caught, the vibrations alert her that dinner has arrived.

🪰 Once she reaches the prey, she quickly wraps it in silk and bites it. The bite paralyzes the insect and injects enzymes that begin breaking down its insides, allowing the spider to feed on it later.

And one last fascinating fact: after mating, the female may sometimes eat the male. In the spider world, romance can be a little risky. šŸ˜„

There are still so many places in our forest we’ve never explored, hidden spots where human feet may have never stepped.

That’s what makes hiking here so exciting, you never know what you might discover.
