The pedestrian crossing at Almont Avenue and Fraser Street is being upgraded by the Town of New Glasgow to improve safety 🚶🏻♀️🚶🏽🚶🏾♂️
Almont Avenue Crosswalk Upgrade Project:
The pedestrian crossing at Almont Avenue and Fraser Street is being upgraded to improve safety, with work continuing throughout September.
This is considered a mid-block crossing because there are no stop signs on Almont Avenue at this location. The current crosswalk does not align with the intersection on the west side of Almont Avenue, and poor sightlines for vehicles travelling north, or outbound, on Almont Avenue are a significant concern.
The upgrades include:
- Installing curb extensions, also known as “bump-outs,” on both sides of the street to improve safety and visibility, and help manage traffic flow.
- Installing rectangular rapid-flashing beacons with flashing amber pedestrian lights.
- Adding an advance crosswalk sign for inbound traffic on Almont Avenue.
- Relocating the existing driveway north of the crosswalk so the crosswalk has its own entry and exit point, complete with an accessible ramp and tactile warning indicators.
- Adding zebra pavement markings appropriate for a mid-block crosswalk.
- Properly positioning crosswalk signage.
The attached sketch shows the recommended engineering design for the improvements.
