Celebrate Rivers Day at Creston & District Community Complex
Sunday, September 27, 2026, 12:00 to 4:00 PM

Join the Regional District of Central Kootenay for the Goat River Watershed Celebration, a free, family-friendly afternoon marking Rivers Day, the largest river awareness event.

We are grateful that yaqan nuʔkiy, Councilor Robin Louie will open the afternoon.

Meet organizations working in the Goat River watershed, try hands-on activities, and spend the afternoon outdoors with your community. Catch Creston Museum's slideshow "Electrified: Electrical Power Comes to Creston" at 1:30 pm and Wildsight's fun and lively hands-on "sharing water" game at 3:00 pm

On September 19, the RDCK will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in Nakusp.

These events provide an opportunity for RDCK residents to responsibly dispose of RESIDENTIAL household hazardous waste materials for FREE.
Please note:
• Only residential Household Hazards Waste will be accepted.
• Donations to your local Food Bank will be accepted.
• Commercial or Industrial loads or volumes will NOT be accepted
• Due to the volume and variety of items collected at this event, there may be some wait time for service.

An overnight wildfire was reported at Taghum Beach Regional Park, 6 kilometers west of Nelson, on Thursday, September 10th. At first light, Nelson Fire & Rescue crews attended to find a 10-meter x 15-meter spot fire that had burnt deep into the duff layer beneath a thick canopy of Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine trees.
Despite recent rains, crews found that the prolonged summer drought conditions allowed deep-seated burning and open-flame spread amongst downed woody forest debris.
The cause was determined to be an unattended and poorly placed campfire, and camping equipment contributed to the overnight fire spread.
Nelson Fire & Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind all users of parks to obey fire regulations within parks and utilize only approved fire pit locations where fires are allowed.

A small wildfire, approximately 8 metres by 15 metres in size, occurred at Taghum Beach Regional Park this morning. Nelson Fire Rescue responded quickly and the fire is now contained. There was no threat to structures at the park or surrounding properties.

Nelson Fire will remain on scene through the morning to clean up the area.

Thank you to Nelson Fire for their quick response and action.

A reminder to everyone enjoying the outdoors. Please make sure your campfire is completely out before leaving. Even a small fire can quickly spread.

YRB will be working on the Barrett Creek Bridge on the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail from September 11 to 18. During this time, the Rail Trail will be closed from Kapak Road to the north crossing of Porto Rico Road.

What do you do with your used cooking oil?

Well, it shouldn't go down the drain - that can upset septic systems and create blockages in sewer lines, but it's not great in the garbage either, where it can pollute ground water.

Fortunately, residents and small businesses in the Town of Creston area can bring their used cooking oil to the Creston Landfill (1501 Mallory Road), for recycling for FREE (up to 10L per day)!

This is a piloting program, in partnership with service provider Leduc Industrial Inc. which upcycles the oil into a high-quality concrete release agent.
