A little wildlife love from the Giving Garden 🦫

This spring, one of the organizations Jackson and I are raising funds for through our annual plant sale is Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau, Ontario. Aspen Valley rehabilitates injured and orphaned native Ontario wildlife and works hard to give these animals a second chance in the wild.

One of the many animals they care for are beavers, and honestly… how can you not love that face? 🦫

A couple fun facts about beavers:

• Beavers are the largest rodents in North America and can weigh up to 60 lbs!
• Their famous flat tails help them swim, balance, and even warn other beavers of danger by slapping the water.
• Beaver dams actually create wetlands that benefit hundreds of other species, making them one of nature’s most important ecosystem builders.

Through this year’s Giving Garden plant sale, we are hoping to raise enough funds to purchase two incubators for Aspen Valley’s wildlife nursery, helping tiny orphaned animals stay warm and stable when they first arrive.

If you’re planning your garden this spring, we’d love your support! 🌱
Every plant purchased and every donation made, helps us move closer to our goal and supports this incredible work.

Ooooh…Those sweet little faces! 😘

Check out and support all the amazing things the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre does and spread some love!

We couldn’t have helped as many turtles as we did without the support of Dr Sue and her crew! ❤️

During the winter, it would be wise to check all window wells for animals who have found their way into them. If no one had noticed this little guy, he would have starved to death, however by placing a board into the well, he could climb out and be on his way. Thanks to Jen and her husband for rescuing him.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD - if you see these white things on a wild animal, it is in trouble and needs immediate help!

These are fly eggs (also know as “fly strike”) and will hatch in less than 24 hours. Once they do, maggots will wreak havoc on the poor animal they are attached to.

Flies lay their eggs on animals they sense to be dying so their larva can feast on it. They lay about 150 eggs at a time, so it doesn’t take long for freshly hatched larva to cause severe damage to the host.

If you see these on an animal, don’t wait to call someone. They need help IMMEDIATELY. Please call your local wildlife rehabilitator ASAP.

Let’s spread the word to prevent as much suffering as possible. Knowledge is power and the more we know the more we can help.

Great opportunity for some citizen science!

Our bat populations have been drastically reduced by White Nose Syndrome. Let’s give them a helping hand.

If you have a bat box and would like to participate in this study, please fill out this online multiple-choice survey with questions about your bat box. Participants will be sent microclimate loggers to install in their boxes before bats return in the spring (ideally installation happens in March or...
