Today, May 10th, is Bear Witness Day. 🧸🧡

This National Day of Action invites people of all ages to “bear witness” to the full and prompt implementation of Jordan’s Principle – a human rights principle and legal rule that ensures First Nations children receive the services and supports they need, when they need them.

➡️ About Jordan’s Principle:

Jordan’s Principle is named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba who was failed by both the federal and provincial governments and spent his entire life in hospital before passing away at the age of five.

Teddy bears were Jordan’s favourite toy🧸 They have since become a symbol of solidarity and awareness.

Bear Witness Day honours Jordan’s legacy and calls for action so First Nations children do not experience gaps, delays, or denials in accessing government services because they are First Nations.

➡️ Here are some ways you can take action today:

• Learn more about Jordan’s Principle through educational resources developed by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada

• Share photos of teddy bears using the hashtags and to help raise awareness

• Write a letter or postcard to your elected official or the Prime Minister calling for the full implementation of Jordan’s Principle and the Spirit Bear Plan. Templates are available here: https://fncaringsociety.com/bear-witness-day

🚨 This year’s Emergency Preparedness Week marks a historical milestone for Abegweit First Nation 🚨

✍️ We are incredibly proud to share that on May 4th, 2026, Chief Gould signed a first-of-its-kind multilateral emergency management agreement with the GCIndigenous and Prince Edward Island Government, making Epekwitk the first in Canada to enter into such an agreement!

🗣️"Abegweit First Nation is proud to be formally recognized as an equal and full partner in emergency management service delivery. Working collaboratively with the federal and provincial governments allows us to provide exemplary emergency services that are culturally grounded and managed by our own community. This partnership represents meaningful progress on our path toward self-determination." - Chief Gould
