🔥 Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work.

Test yours monthly, swap the batteries every 6 months, and replace the unit every 10 years. A few minutes of maintenance could make all the difference.

Smoke alarms can save lives.
Make sure yours are working properly by
- testing them once a month
- replacing the batteries every 6 months
- replacing your smoke detectors every 10 years

⚠️Fire Safety Notice: Lithium-Ion Batteries⚠️

We would like to remind residents about the growing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are commonly found in:

🔋 Cell phones
🔋 Power tools
🔋 E-bikes & scooters
🔋 Laptops & tablets
🔋 Portable chargers
🔋 Children’s toys and RC devices

While generally safe, damaged, overheated, or improperly charged lithium-ion batteries can fail violently and cause intense fires that spread quickly and are difficult to extinguish.

🚨Safety Tips:
• Only use approved chargers designed for your device
• Never charge batteries unattended or overnight
• Keep batteries away from heat sources and direct sunlight
• Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, leaking, or overheating
• Avoid storing batteries near exits or combustible materials
• Do not throw lithium batteries in household garbage
• Install working smoke alarms in your home and cottage

⚠️Warning signs of battery failure:
• Excessive heat
• Swelling or bulging
• Strange odours
• Hissing or popping sounds
• Smoke or sparks

If a lithium-ion battery begins smoking or catches fire:
➡️ Evacuate immediately
➡️ Call 911
➡️ Do not attempt to handle a large battery fire yourself

Stay safe, South Dundas!

Things got fired up in South Dundas this weekend! 🔥

Our forty SDG recruits were back for another action-packed training weekend — and this time, they brought the heat. Literally.

On the live fire side, recruits tackled Class A fires in the burn can, car fires, ground cover fires, liquid fires, and LPG fires. Back at the station they got an introduction to the Incident Management System (IMS) and wrapped things up with a skills review — complete with a little friendly competition! 🏆

This crew continues to impress, and we're so proud to be part of such an incredible milestone in their training journey. The future of SDG fire services is in great hands!

A HUGE thank you to the following:

🔥Mudde Farms for their straw bales for our ground cover evolutions.
🔥Marilyn Houghton for the hay bales for our interior live fire evolutions.
🔥Lactalis Wi******er for the pallets for our interior live fire evolutions.
🔥Bills Towing for the equipment needed to clean up the training grounds before and after.

🍟❤️ On May 6th, we had the pleasure of taking part in McHappy Day! We traded our usual duties to greet customers, work the drive-thru, and make special deliveries, all in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

McHappy Day raises funds to help families stay close to their ill children by providing a home away from home when they need it most.

It was an honour to join the incredible McDonald's staff in making a difference, one Happy Meal at a time! 🏠💛

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK - Emergency kits

In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. You should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

You may have some of the items already, such as food, water and a battery operated or wind-up flashlight. The key is to make sure they are organized and easy to find. Would you be able to find your flashlight in the dark? Make sure your kit is easy to carry and everyone in the household knows where it is. Keep it in a backpack, duffle bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place, such as your front-hall closet. If you have many people in your household, your emergency kit could get heavy.

It's a good idea to separate some of these supplies in backpacks. That way, your kit will be more portable and each person can personalize his or her own grab-and-go emergency kit.
