Happy Nurses Week to all those amazing people who staff our hospitals, LTC's and other healthcare facilities!

But we'd like to say a special Happy Nurses Week to our fantastic nurses at the SEICC right here in Moosomin.

Their compassion, professionalism and caring nature are always an inspiration, they always greet you with a smile and a kind word, we might be biased but we are very very fond of our nurses here at SEICC!

Happy Mother's Day to all you mums out there, and especially to the ones who pull on the uniform and climb on the rig to answer the call!

Soooo, following on from yesterdays somewhat grumpy post (sorry, not sorry) we have an update on last weeks post regarding our newly purchased Lucas device.

Instructors from Stryker were at the base yesterday taking everyone through the operation, maintenance and care of the unit.

It was an interesting afternoon, lots learned and practice had!

So the machine is now officially in service, we hope we never have to use it, but it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

We will be continuing our manual CPR training and skills as usual, the Lucas 3 is an aid to CPR, it's not replacing our manual skills!

Ok folks, PSA and a little bit of a rant.

Whilst one of our crews were responding to an urgent emergency call using lights and sirens, a number of drivers failed to notice the ambulance until the very last second, and when they did see them the moved to the right but refused to slow down, making it more dangerous for our crew to pass them.

The law here in SK states on a two lane highway, traffic on BOTH sides of the road have to slow down, move over and STOP.

Now the majority of drivers do as required, and we appreciate that, but unfortunately there are always a few who either aren't paying attention or think the rules don't apply to them.

So please be aware of your surroundings when driving, check those mirrors regularly, because it could be your family member, friend, relative etc we're responding to help. (We hope it isn't, but life is life)

What is it Wednesday is back, I know, we've been somewhat lackadaisical with this series, we get busy, we're on days off but mostly we just plain old forget.

Anyhoo, today we have a very special WiiW! We are introducing a new medical device in to service, we have invested in an automated CPR device, otherwise known as a Lucas Device.

This device will be used on applicable calls if its use is deemed suitable. The Lucas is designed to do mechanical chest compressions on patients requiring CPR, it can provide consistent and uniform quality chest compressions.

A device such as this can be a tremendous asset especially in a rural setting where often a single two person ambulance crew is all that is available, it helps reduce medic workload and free's up a pair of hands to concentrate on other tasks.

But don't worry, our paramedics will still be training for and utilizing manual CPR techniques, the Lucas is primarily a back up for our medics should they need it.

April 19th-25th is National Volunteer Week, we'd like to say a big thank you to all the local SHA Medical First Responder groups and their members that we work with regularly, these volunteers respond to many of the calls alongside full time EMS crews, they see the things we see, but go back to their 'normal' life as soon as the call is finished, that, takes a very special kind of person!

In the rural setting these MFR's are often the first point of contact for a patient when the EMS system is activated, and their support on scene is much appreciated!

So thanks for all you do, SHA Medical First Responders!
