I will be joining City Administration and Councillor Stevens at tonight’s Come and Go Session where residents can learn more about Administration’s recommendation to create Regina’s first Community Safety Zone in the Cathedral neighbourhood. Basically, Administration is recommending a lower speed limit because it reduces severe traffic injuries and fatalities.
I am very proud of City staff who are advocating to implement Vision Zero, which was first implemented in Sweden in the 1990s, and that has proved successful across Europe and North America. We have a very passionate team on this project, and I am grateful for their determination to make changes that will save lives.
There are tons of studies that support the notion that reduced speed limits reduce injury and death. For example, a UK Department of Transportation Study titled Killing Speed and Saving Lives, found that pedestrian fatality risk rose from just 5% when the vehicle was going at 32 km/h to 45% when the vehicle was going at 48 km/h (30 mph) and a staggering 85% when the vehicle was going 64 km/h.
According to Vision Zero, Canada is in an abysmal 28th place in global road safety rankings, with more than 1800 deaths and some 160,000 injuries on our roads every year. We have twice the number of per capita traffic deaths as countries like Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. The comparison becomes more pronounced when one considers that those places have far higher rates of active mobility, including vast numbers of seniors and children getting around under their own steam.
Hope to see you there!
