The Importance of The Former Church of the Ascension for Montreal’s Religious Heritage
Although the former church of the ascension is no longer an important religious place of worship, it still holds a cultural importance for the city of Montreal. Now known as the Mordecai Richler library, this landmark hosts a large collection of books and art. It has works written in english, french and spanish. It also offers the loan of multiple different instruments to the community such as guitars, ukuleles and keyboards. This library hosts various workshops and conferences concerning a wide range of topics. From art and music to the history of Montreal or the history of the library itself, it aims to entertain and educate members of the community of every age. In addition, it offers the use of its activity room for meetings and gatherings within the Mile End community. There is an area dedicated for studying and reading. In addition, the same stained glass windows that were a part of the original church are still present as well as other religious symbols like the plaques that are hung from that ceiling and represent different Anglican saints.
