Academic programs with focus on Muslims and Muslim-adjacent peoples, the dīn of Islam, the languages, politics, history, art, literature, and anthropology of the Islamic world, and the dynamics of contemporary Muslim societies here and abroad. In its academic programmes, the Institute of Islamic Studies focuses on the religion of Islam, on the history and civilization of the Islamic world, and on the dynamics of contemporary Muslim societies. Founded in 1952, the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill is a dynamic community devoted to research and teaching in a broad range of related fields and languages. Building on its origins as a place where Muslims and non-Muslims came together to study the multifaceted worlds of Islam and Muslim texts, peoples and cultures, the Institute has always maintained a mix of scholarly, community and other engagements in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and worldwide. Congratulations to IIS PhD candidate Jaleh Ebrahimi, who has won a Margaret Gillett Graduate Research award for her work in Gender and Women's Studies! Behet eftekhār mikonim, Jaleh! The research award will aid Jaleh as she completes her research on storytelling (naqqāli) and education in Iranian history.

Did you know that the Institute of Islamic Studies' graduate programs include a Gender and Women's Studies Concentration? The Gillett award is open to graduate students, in any McGill department, who are conducting research in Gender and Women's Studies. granted by the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, in honour of Dr. Margaret Gillett, Macdonald Professor of Education at McGill University (retired), who initiated the Women's Studies program at McGill. A Mixed Lexicon for Troubled Times: An Armenian Bishop and Persianate Poetry in Ak Koyunlu Lands

In the fifteenth century, an Armenian bishop in Amid (present-day Diyarbakır) found himself as a confidant at the court of the Ak Koyunlu, a Turkic tribal confederation who ruled just east of the Ottomans. Not only did this bishop straddle multiple worlds, but so too did the forms of language he used in speech and writing. Such language is referred to as medieval or "vernacular" Armenian today, and it was replete with Persian, Arabic, and Turkish loanwords, which undertook different forms of labor for diverse social groups. This talk examines the mixed labor of this mixed lexicon in Ak Koyunlu and Armenian society. What, in short, might a suite of linguistic behaviors reveal about communal life for fifteenth-century Armenians, as unevenly integrated subjects within Islamicate societies, east of the Ottomans?

Michael Pifer is Marie Manoogian Professor of Armenian Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Associate Professor of Middle East Studies. His research seeks to situate medieval Armenian language and literary history within broader contexts of multilingualism and cultural exchange, particularly in Islamicate and Persianate societies.

Heeva Shahidian is one of the four winners of the Undergraduate Kuwait Prize for 2026! Tabrīk mīguyīm! Serving as VP External for WIMESSA, McGill's most cheikh student group, Heeva will also be co-VP Events - Refugee Education, Activism and Advocacy with WUSC McGill. A dexterous artist in charcoal, she has also been an Associate Editor and Illustrator for Maktoub, McGill’s Journal of Islamic Studies.

In her own words,

"A lot of my academic interests centre around Iran, Persian culture, and the broader Middle East, alongside international development and humanitarian issues. I’ve really loved the classes I’ve taken at the Institute so far, especially the opportunity to study Persian literature, history, and contemporary Iran. I’ve also really enjoyed being able to explore these interests across both of my majors and connect what I study in the classroom to the kinds of humanitarian and advocacy work I hope to pursue in the future."

Intermediate Urdu-Hindi student Rafay Ahmed is the winner of this year's Maurice and Sara Greenblatt Scholarship!

Hailing from Saskatchewan, Rafay is pursuing McGill's Canadian Studies program, and winning laurel upon laurel in the process, mashallah. This summer, Rafay has been working as a Multilateral Policy Intern at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the International Organizations in Vienna, primarily responsible for covering the International Atomic Energy Agency and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.Since his first year at McGill, Rafay has been involved with The McGill International Review. In May of 2026, he started as the Editor-in-Chief of the MIR for the 2026-2027 academic year. An exceptional student of Urdu apart from all of his other accomplishments, Rafay is very much deserving of this prestigious award.

The Greenblatt Scholarship is awarded by the Faculty of Arts Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Department of History and departments offering Modern Languages. It is available to undergraduate students taking a modern language and proceeding to their final year, ranked by yearly GPA.
