The concluded on 9 September in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, and the Chinese city that lent its name to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework ( ).

Taking place a mere few weeks ahead of the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference ( ) and co-chaired by China and Canada, this informal dialogue hosted multi-stakeholder consultations on the global report on collective progress in the implementation of the KMGBF. The report will inform the first since the adoption of the Framework in 2022, which will take place at COP 17 in Yerevan.

During the Kunming Dialogue, all participants took part in the consultations on an equal footing. Representatives of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, indigenous peoples and local communities, women, youth and various stakeholder groups shared their views, experiences and suggestions on what needs to be done to bridge the gaps revealed by the global report.

At the centre of discussions were gaps in the scope and coverage of national action (relative to the global ambition of the KMGBF), in the provision of means of implementation, in activating whole-of-government and whole-of-society biodiversity action and in data and knowledge for progress tracking.

Conveying the sense of urgency in taking action for nature, His Excellency Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of China and Co-chair of the Kunming Dialogue, said that “faced with serious implementation challenges and sizable gaps, all Parties must take action immediately".

“The active engagement in the Kunming Dialogue is testament to our shared commitment to advancing the Framework and turning our shared ambition for nature into action,” the Honourable Nathalie Provost, Secretary of State (Nature), Canada, and co-Chair of the Kunming Dialogue said.

Setting the stage for what is set to be a pivotal COP 17, His Excellency Mr. Hambardzum Matevosyan, Minister of Environment of the Republic of Armenia and President Designate of COP17 Armenia, who attended the Kunming Dialogue, said: “we want the Global Review to help strengthen implementation, mobilise action, and create the conditions for countries and all stakeholders to deliver on their commitments. And we want the outcomes of this Kunming Dialogue to contribute directly to that effort.”

“Protecting nature isn’t charity. It’s economic self-interest” is the title of an opinion article authored by the Executive Secretary of the CBD, Astrid Schomaker. In the piece published in the 7 September edition of the Financial Times , Ms. Schomaker argues that the unprecedented engagement in , which the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework ( ) has brought about, is clear and welcome, but that more, much more, is needed, not only from governments but also from businesses and financial institutions. “Setting biodiversity targets was the easy part,” she wrote, adding that the goal now is to tackle the more challenging task of charting pathways for accelerated implementation at .
