I often ask clients with mental health issues, emotional dysregulation and other concerns about their sleep patterns. While it is true that every individual may need varying amounts of sleep, having consistent quality sleep isn’t only important, it is a basic necessity. There is a large amount of research with regards to sleep. While we sleep, our brain continues to function, processing information, affecting memory, and recharging our body. Sleep affects physical, mental, and emotional health as well as the ability to work, learn and play. The average adult needs between 7-8 hours of sleep per night, teenagers 8-9 hours and children 9-12 hours of sleep. Some people may need a little more, others a little less. The important thing to know is that without it, your day-to-day living can be seriously affected. Getting the sleep you need sets you up to meet the challenges that arise each day so get the ZZZZZ’s that you need!
