Friends of Hancock Woodlands

Friends of Hancock Woodlands Not just a park, Hancock Woodlands is a place that has a story to tell. It was planted and has been maintained by generations of the Hancock family.

The Friends of Hancock Woodlands are a group of community enthusiasts who are dedicated to help to preserve and protect the Hancock Woodlands and to educate the community about its cultural heritage. The Friends of Hancock Woodlands is a volunteer group that works in partnership with the City of Mississauga and its mandate is to preserve, protect, educate and celebrate the Hancock Woodlands and it

s cultural heritage. It's the story of Mississauga in many ways: a tale of immigration, love for the land, respect for the environment, perseverance, tolerance and an overriding principle of generosity. Hancock Woodlands, as it exists today, is a seven- acre property with Rhododendron, Azalea and Mountain Laurel ecologically sharing space with native Trillium, Trout Lily and Mayapple, beneath a tall canopy of ancient White Pine, Oak, Beech and Hemlock. Leslie and Dorothy Hancock created it in the 1930s after fleeing China at gunpoint during the Nationalist revolution of 1927. They were smitten by the rough, un-ploughed swampy pasture and scrub bush property and persevered to develop it into a nursery to propagate ornamental rhododendrons and azaleas from Southeast Asia. The Woodlands is a Carolinian forest home of 150-year-old trees, whose thick canopy hangs over these historical plantings.

Thank you to all who came out to our Open House & BBQ last night. Lovely to see and meet so many friends and neighbours at Hancock Woodlands. It was a beautiful evening, not a drop of rain! The bird feeder building workshop was a big hit with the kids! Thanks to Park People / Amis des parcs and the City of Mississauga for their sponsorship and to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success!
