To the fathers who have lost a child,
and those who longed to become fathers but could not—

To those who are estranged from their children,
those whose children are absent from their lives,
or who made an adoption plan or released a child legally—

To those grieving the loss of a father, father figure, or parenting partner—

To those who are estranged from their dads, or whose relationships with their fathers have been complicated, painful, or unfinished—

To anyone grieving the person who made them feel seen, loved,
or valued as a dad—

And to everyone carrying the ache of Father's Day—

We're holding space for you today.

National Indigenous Peoples Day 🧡

Today, we celebrate the cultures, histories, languages, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to honour the strength, joy, and continued presence of Indigenous communities. It is also a time to reflect on the impacts of colonization, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, systemic inequities, and the many losses experienced by Indigenous individuals, families, and communities; losses that continue to be felt across generations.

At the Centre for Grief and Healing, we recognize that grief is not only personal but can also be collective, historical, cultural, and intergenerational. We hold space for the ways grief and healing can exist side by side.

As we celebrate today, we encourage meaningful reflection and action. Consider learning about the land which you live on, supporting Indigenous artists, authors, and businesses, attending community events, listening to Indigenous voices, or taking time to deepen your understanding of Indigenous histories and realities.

Moments like these remind us why peer support matters. 💙

Grief can be isolating, but when people come together to share their stories, listen with compassion, and hold space for one another, meaningful connections can emerge.

We're grateful to our volunteers and facilitators who help create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and supported in their grief. And we're grateful to every group member who trusts us with a part of their journey.

This reflection is also a beautiful reminder of the ripple effect of support; that being cared for in our grief can inspire us to one day offer that same care to others.

Thank you for sharing these kind words with us. 💙

After a loss, it's not uncommon to find yourself worrying more, feeling on edge, overthinking, or struggling with uncertainty.

If anxiety has been accompanying your grief, here are a few gentle ways to support yourself today:

- Reduce decision fatigue by simplifying choices where you can. Not every decision needs your energy today. Wear the comfortable outfit, eat the familiar meal, or choose the easiest option.

- Spend time with something predictable; a familiar routine, favourite show, or regular walking route can offer comfort when life feels uncertain.

- Create a "Not Today" list and give yourself permission to postpone tasks that aren't urgent.

- Mute the noise by stepping away from news, social media, or notifications that may be adding to your stress. Consider taking a break, even for a short period.

- Do something mildly absorbing like gardening, colouring, organizing, or folding laundry to gently occupy the mind without requiring significant emotional energy. These moments can provide a brief reprieve from worry while keeping you connected to the present.

- Lean on a calming presence:
Grief and anxiety can feel isolating, but you don't have to navigate them alone. Spend time with a trusted friend, family member, support group, or even a pet. Sometimes another person's presence can help us feel a little more grounded when we're struggling.

Grief-related anxiety is a common response to loss. If you're carrying both today, we hope you'll offer yourself the same patience and compassion you would offer someone you care about.

What helps you feel a little more grounded when grief and anxiety show up together?

It's International Men’s Health Week.

Grief can affect every part of our well-being; our mental, emotional, physical, and social health. Yet many men are often assumed or expected to carry loss quietly, support others while struggling themselves, or "move forward" before they're ready.

The reality is that men grieve in many different ways. Some may want to talk openly about their loss, while others may express their grief through action, reflection, creativity, work, or time spent with others. There is no right way to grieve, and every person's experience is unique.

We recognize the importance of creating spaces where men can show up as they are; without judgment, pressure, or expectations about how grief should look.

If you're a man who is grieving, please know that you are not alone. Many men access our grief support programs, groups, and one-to-one services. You are welcome here. You deserve support, care, and a place to be heard.

To learn more about our free grief peer support programs, contact us at [email protected] or visit our website www.bereavedfamilies.ca (link in bio).

We recognize and affirm the experiences of all men, including trans men and gender-diverse people who connect with this message.
