Abbreviated History of the Point:

William Davidson was the first permanent English speaking settler on the Miramichi River. He obtained a large land grant from the Province of NS(NB was not a separate province at the time) in 1765. In the 25 years between 1765 and 1790, the Miramichi Valley changed from a forest wilderness to an organized community with scattered settlements along both sides of t

he river, much of it due to the persistence and ability of William Davidson, a Scotsman. He was a pioneer in the fish, lumber, and shipbuilding industries no only in Miramichi and was successful in establishing overseas markets for Miramichi products. Davidson ( nee John Godsman) from Banffshire, Scotland was accompanied to this area by his business partner, John Cort from Aberdeenshire. They were responsible for establishing many settlers from Scotland in the Miramichi. Following their expulsion from NS, the Acadians took refuge in this area during the 1756-1759 period. A cairn commemorating their history was erected nearby in August 2006. Many of the earliest settlers along the Miramichi are buried at Wilsons Point but there were only 17 identifiable tombstones here when Lord Beaverbrook began a restoration on the site in 1947. At that time the original stones were clean but over the years the writing on them has become almost unreadable, so new markers were purchased by the Scottish Heritage Association. Each marker contains the original inscription where possible. Many of the original graves were enclosed by fences as indicated on the cemetery entrance sign. Lord Beaverbrook was referring to these when he called the park "The Enclosure" in the late 1940s. The first Protestant church in Miramichi area was built at Wilsons Point. James Anderson was the designer and builder of Saint James Church in 1791. He was a Scotsman, brought to the Miramichi by William Davidson. This is the actual site of that church, the cornerstones having been located by archaeologists in 2003. It was similar in size and design to the new interpretive center but we have been unable to locate a picture of the original building. There were a number of traveling clergymen to the Miramichi area in the late 1700s but it was not until 1802 that a Presbyterian minister took up residence in Miramichi. He preached at both Wilsons Point and Moorfields from 1802 until 1814, and is buried in Moorfields cemetery in Millbank. The Point had been know by various names but after 1820 it was know as Wilsons Point. It was named for a Scotsman from Stromness, Orkney, Scotland, John Wilson. He and his wife, Euphemia Clouston arrive in the Miramichi about 1817 and settled at the Point. John Wilson was known as the ferryman from the Point. He operated his ferry from Wilsons Point to both sides of the river and to Beaubear's Island. In 1856 the North West Bridge was opened. The services of the ferryman were less frequently required, so John Wilson retired from his ferryman business to become a farmer. The Point is still know as Wilsons Point.

Hard to believe we’re half way through September already…seriously does anyone rose feel like this has been the weirdest year on record? It certainly is the speediest.

Seeing we are just a few days away to it officially being Fall, we would love to find a few more vendors for our Fall Fair on Saturday, October 10th.

If you know of any one who makes pottery, stain glass, utensil jewellery, apple cider or other juices, has fresh poultry, meat or seafood, or has high end wreaths, porch decor or quilts have them reach out to us. We’d really love to see the entire lot filled.

The Women of the Point and Piper David will be back under the pines this coming Sunday and we will be here daily starting at 930 am.

Drop by to hear about the centuries worth of history surrounding our gem, check out some fabulous local items for sake in our gift shop or sign up for a workshop.

Hope to see you soon! 😊

We have made the difficult decision to cancel the Summer’s Farewell Ceilidh.

We have always done our best to provide the ultimatum experience to our visitors and without committed musicians we could not good faith move forward with this event.

It’s unfortunate for all and we apologize for any inconvenience. Please spread the word if possible.

We look forward to see you all at the Sunday Scone Social this Sunday Sept 13th from 11-4pm.

We are putting out one final desperate plea regarding the Summer’s Farewell Ceilidh that is scheduled for tomorrow night ( Friday Sept 11th) at 7pm.

We need to know before 4pm today whether you plan on participating as a musician, singer, poet or storyteller or whether you’re planning on attending to just enjoy the show.

We don’t want to have to cancel, however it won’t be much of a ceilidh with just our Fabulous host Calum Lykan. He’s worth the price of admission ( donation 😉) however he doesn’t play an instrument and he swears he can’t sing.

Please comment here, send a message, an email or call to let us know.

Our workshop was so much fun yesterday and yes we finally got some photos. Cathleen did a fantastic job instructing and our participants did a wonderful job following her instructions. Thanks to those who traveled from nearby and from Fredericton to paint the afternoon away.

There’s still time to sign up for next week’s sunflower wreath workshop. If we don’t get enough interest we will be postponing it until next season.

We open at 930am. See you soon! 😊

It’s Workshop Wednesday at the Hidden Gem today. Just a reminder that our start time is 1pm today.

We are still debating on whether to cancel our Ceilidh that is scheduled for this Friday night and will be making the decision by end of day. Unfortunately we have no confirmed musicians, singers or poets and with out those important elements it would not be a success. Please reach out to us asap if you do plan to participate.

We will be going ahead with our 3rd Annual Sunday Scone Social this coming Sunday Sept 13th from 11-4pm.

There’s no need for reservations, it’s pay as you arrive and you can enjoy them on site or take home for later. Gill always has plenty of flavor options to choose from. With two big scones you can easily share, but why should you when it’s just $10/ person and includes a beverage.

Our trails are starting to get seasonal and it’s always the most magical this time of year. Stop by the interpretive center for a tour or to check out the gift shop.

Doors open at 930 see you soon! 😊

Just a reminder to those who are already registered this week’s workshop runs from 1-4pm.

Stay tuned for our decision about our Ceilidh that’s scheduled for this Friday at 7pm. If we don’t have a committed interest we will be canceling it. Let us know if you are coming and participating before tomorrow at noon.

Our doors open at 930, drop by to check out our gift shop, take a tour and find out more details on all of our events.
