The Medicine Hat Police Commission (MHPC) is pleased to announce the extension of Alan Murphy’s contract as Chief of Police for the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS). Under the new agreement, Chief Murphy will continue to lead the Service through to the end of 2031.

Since his appointment in 2022, Chief Murphy has focused on strengthening local partnerships and enhancing community engagement. His leadership has been key in developing a new police training partnership with Medicine Hat College and supporting youth mentorship through the First Responder Academy in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education. He has also prioritized modernizing MHPS equipment and training, ensuring officers are well prepared to meet the evolving needs of the community.

"The Commission took a careful and thoughtful approach in reviewing Chief Murphy’s contract,” says Commission Chair Paul Carolan. “We believe his leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the relationship between the Police Service and our community. Extending his contract reflects our confidence in the direction he’s leading and our shared commitment to keeping Medicine Hat a safe and connected community."

“Leading the MHPS and working with our community for the past three years has been an extremely rewarding experience,” says Chief Murphy. “I am grateful for the dedication of our MHPS staff and the continued support of the Police Commission. I look forward to building on our progress and continuing to serve the citizens of Medicine Hat.”

The MHPC remains committed to working collaboratively with the Chief, his leadership team, and the residents of Medicine Hat to strengthen community safety and foster public trust.

This morning we welcomed the participants of Police Recruit Training Class #8 . This cohort of training includes seven recruits from the MHPS, two recruits from the Canadian Pacific Kanas City (CPKC) Police Service and one recruit from the Blood Tribe Police Service. These recruits will spend the next 24 weeks training in Medicine Hat before joining their police agencies.

The Police Recruit Training program is a partnership between the MHPS and the Medicine Hat College with a competency-based curriculum focused on essential skills such as control tactics, fi****ms, emergency vehicle operations, investigative skills, legal studies, and report writing. Additional modules focus on mental health, with a focus on de-escalation and crisis management, and community policing, with an emphasis on a collaborative and problem-solving approach that fosters trust, respect, diversity and partnerships.

This initiative highlights the strength of collaborative efforts in fostering a safer community while preparing recruits to excel in their roles as police officers.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in policing, now is a great time to apply as the MHPS is currently accepting applications for the next training cohort which will start in the Fall of 2026. To learn more about the required qualifications and to apply visit www.mhps.ca

🐈🐕 We have made the decision to continue operating animal pound services permanently.

🤔 What can you expect?

The public can expect to see the same standards of care for animals in the facility. And, we will maintain partnership opportunities with groups like the Medicine Hat SPCA, vet clinic(s), and other animal services (grooming, daycare, cremation, etc.), for the provision of services.

🤔 Why did we assume operations permanently?

After assuming temporary operation in June, we issued a request for proposals (RFP) to seek a suitable operator. We were unable to find an operator that met the requirements of the operation, and the RFP was cancelled.
