The Otonabee-South Monaghan Fire Department is reminding residents that a flashing green light on a vehicle means a volunteer firefighter is responding to an emergency.
If you see one, please safely pull over to the right and let them pass. Every second counts; your quick action can help firefighters reach someone in need faster.

The amount of people that don’t know what to do when a fire truck approaches them with lights and sirens in rural northern Ontario is appalling. It is simple pull over to the right and bring your vehicle to a stop.

🚦 Firefighter Green Light Program – What You Should Know

💚 What does the green light mean?

A green courtesy light on a personal vehicle indicates a volunteer firefighter or first responder is responding to an emergency.

🚗 What it does NOT mean
• ❌ It is not an emergency vehicle
• ❌ It does not give the driver special driving privileges
• ❌ The driver must obey all traffic laws

🤝 What you can do
• Be alert and patient
• Allow extra space if it’s safe to do so
• Never feel required to pull over or break traffic laws

🧑‍🚒 Why it matters
Courtesy and awareness help volunteer responders reach stations and scenes safely—protecting responders and the public.
Green lights are about awareness, not authority. Thank you for helping keep our volunteer firefighters safe while they respond to emergencies.

Every year, nearly 100 Tow Truck Operators in North America are killed, that is 100 people that didn't return to their families at the end of the day all while trying to help others and earn a living. Please, SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER.... our lives depend on it!
