Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we recognize and thank all career, paid-on-call, wildland, and volunteer firefighters for their dedication and service to their communities. 🔥 🙌

If you’ve ever considered stepping up and making a difference, we are currently recruiting members who live and work within the district. More information can be found in the comments below.

Online reports indicate smoke is coming from the Malahat area. We do not have specifics on the source, but we can confirm no fires are being addressed in the district currently. Social media suggests the smoke is likely due to a fire at the Heartland Landfill.

🚒 Malahat Fire Rescue – Spring Craft Fair Reminder 🚒

Just a reminder that this Saturday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, we’ll be hosting our Annual Spring Craft Fair at the hall!

We’ve got some excellent local vendors lined up, so it’s a great chance to come out and support the community.

We’ll also have our Fire Safety Trailer on site which is a fun and interactive experience for both kids and adults to learn about fire safety, including exit drills in the home (E.D.I.T.H.), smoke detectors, and more.

📍 Location: 935 Whittaker Road (just off the highway near Spectacle Lake)

Be sure to stop by, say hello, and spend some time with us. Hope to see you there! 🚒

This evening, we took a moment to recognize some significant achievements within the department. 🏅 🔥 🫡

Most notably, Chief Patterson was presented with her 20-Year Exemplary Fire Service Award. This federal recognition includes a medal and a signed certificate from the Governor General and was presented by Deputy Chief Cooper. Chief Patterson has dedicated countless evenings, weekends, and days to the fire service, all in a fully volunteer capacity serving the Malahat community. This is an incredible milestone and a true reflection of her commitment and leadership. Thank you, Chief Patterson, for everything you do for our department, our members, and our community.

We also recognized the promotion of Captain Joe Whyte to Assistant Chief. Joe has committed close to 15 years of service to the department and continues to play a critical role as our Training Officer. This added role is a significant responsibility that directly supports the growth and safety of our current and recruit members. Congratulations, Assistant Chief Whyte, and thank you for your continued dedication, knowledge and leadership. With the new rank comes a new badge and updated helmet as well!

Lastly, the Chief presented badges to our two newest fire officers, Lieutenant Tom Williams and Lieutenant Dillon Thornton. Congratulations to both on this achievement and stepping into your new roles.

It may not feel like wildfire season yet, but behind the scenes our members have been putting in the work.

Over the past month, we’ve been refreshing skills and checking all wildfire equipment to make sure we’re ready. Our newest recruits are also learning new practical skills, and we are all enjoying a few extra daylight minutes on our Thursday night practices ☀️

A reminder to residents… now is a great time to start your own preparedness. Keep your eyes on updates from FireSmart BC and Emergency Management Cowichan on how you can start preparing for the coming summer season! 🔥

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, we have a few spots left open on our 26/27 recruitment class, head over to our website for details on applications: www.malahatfirerescue.ca

Another great training night with our current recruit class working towards their NFPA 1001. Focusing on fire suppression techniques, ventilation, and entry drills. Thank you to our mutual aid partners Mill Bay Fire Rescue for use of their awesome training facility. We fill the structure with training smoke to simulate zero visibility conditions, this allows for a controlled and safe practice environment until our recruits are ready for live fire training in the coming months!
