Our Mission is to interpret and celebrate the heritage of LaHave and the lower LaHave River area. Our Vision is to be a dynamic center that commemorates the history, the community, and the culture of the past and present.

Join us Sunday, August 30 from 1:30–3 PM for our End of Summer Ice Cream Social at Fort Point Museum.

Enjoy one last ice cream from the shop, giant lawn games, and music with Hank Middleton. Come say goodbye to our summer staff and help us celebrate the end of the season!

The ice cream shop closes for the season on August 30, but the museum is staying open through September, thanks to our volunteers.

The small wooden lighthouse building beside the museum is being removed today, so we thought we’d share a little of its history.

The building is not an original lighthouse, and it is not a particularly old structure. The original lighthouse at Fort Point was demolished years ago and replaced with a modern metal navigation light tower.

In 1986, at the request of the Lunenburg County Historical Society, which operates Fort Point Museum, a small wooden lighthouse building was constructed on the site. The idea was to create something more fitting for the historic museum grounds and to complement the Lighthouse Route.

It was a sweet little building, and we have some great photographs of it looking its best. Unfortunately, almost 40 years of exposure to the weather and salt air have not been kind to a small wooden structure. The museum has reported its deteriorating condition over the years, and the roof and structure had reached the point where leaving it in place was no longer safe.

The building belongs to the Province of Nova Scotia, who is responsible for its removal.

The photos show the site over the years, including the earlier navigation tower, the original 1986 drawing, the building in better days, and the work taking place today.

Join us Tuesday, August 18 at 6:30 pm for an evening with Acadian author Deb Camelin at Fort Point Museum.

Deb will talk about writing historical fiction and the process of bringing Acadian history and stories into her work. We’ll be serving blueberry cake!

If you’re planning to attend, please register in advance if you can. It helps us plan for seating and refreshments.
