GREAT NEWS: The West Dalhousie/Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County, which began during the summer of 2025, has now been confirmed as 100% extinguished following the completion of recent aerial hotspot scanning.

This wildfire was a major and devastating event, impacting a significant area and requiring an extensive response effort over many months. Tremendous appreciation is extended to all agencies, crews, volunteers, and community members who played a role in the response and recovery.

With wildfires already active around the province, members of Petite Rivière Fire Department spent the evening training close to home — setting up a mock scenario in a local subdivision bordering wooded provincial park land.

Crews practiced pump operations and wildland fire response, focusing on water supply, hose deployment, communication, and working safely in heavily wooded terrain. These training nights help prepare our department for the fast-moving and unpredictable nature of wildland fires, especially during dry conditions.

We’re proud of the dedication our volunteers continue to show — rain or shine, day jobs finished, supper dishes barely dry, and straight into bunker gear.

A reminder to our community to stay wildfire aware, follow burn restrictions, and report smoke or suspicious activity early. One spark in the woods can travel faster than gossip at the The Petite General Store . 🔥🚒

38!

38!

Today, April 9 was a notably busy day for fire services across Nova Scotia, with at least 38 reported incidents involving grass, brush, and woods fires alone.

While April is typically a busy time of year for grass fires in the province, today stood out as exceptional, particularly during the mid to late afternoon hours, when crews were handling multiple incidents at once across several regions.

Windy conditions played a significant role in fire behaviour, allowing a number of fires to spread quickly and, in several cases, threaten nearby structures such as homes, garages, and sheds.

Multiple departments were required at a number of scenes, while a few incidents were cancelled en route or determined to be minor upon arrival.

Days like today highlight exactly why daily burning restrictions are in place across the province, as conditions can change rapidly and fires can escalate faster than expected, even when the ground may appear damp.

Residents are encouraged to use sound judgment and follow all provincial and municipal guidelines when conducting any outdoor burning to help reduce the risk of further incidents.

Use common sense!

Our fire hall received a much appreciated donation from Nova Scotia Power last week.
The donation was in recognition of our commitment to community during the recent power outage. 🧊🕯
At tonight's monthly meeting, the membership voted to use it for our Canada Day community barbecue. 🍔🌭
Put it on the calendar - we were already talking about the fried onions! 🧅🥹
