" Turns out, the NS government is trying to pull a fast one with regard to the local affordable & clean energy evolution we all want to see in the province." Atlantic Sierra Club .
With little to no consultation the Nova Scotia government has placed a (radioactive) Trojan horse in the much-needed electricity reform law - two Clauses of the proposed Energy Reform Bill would remove the ban on nuclear power generation in Nova Scotia.

Aside from risks to human health and links to nuclear weapons proliferation, nuclear power is a huge waste of time and money - at a time when we can waste neither. If you think your power bills are jaw-dropping - just wait till expensive and risky nuclear power gets added to the dirty energy cocktail we are currently all paying for on our electricity bills.

We need a clear path to clean energy that benefits Nova Scotians - not the dangerous, dirty distraction of nuclear power. Nova Scotians have said no repeatedly to uranium mining (the power source for nuclear) and nuclear power over the years. Don't let the NS government open the door to nuclear power when we need all of our efforts on real energy solutions that will benefit - not harm - local communities.

Please see below for more info, and how you can write a quick note to the Legislative Council's office to tell legislators to take out clauses in the Energy Reform Act that would lift the ban on nuclear power generation in Nova Scotia.

Dear Fellow Nova Scotians,

We are writing with urgency about the Nova Scotia government’s Bill 404 Energy Reform (2024) Act which contains Clauses 52 and 75 that would open the door to nuclear power in our province!

Bill 404 had First Reading Feb. 27, 2024 and is on a rapid road to Third Reading and the Vote by the House.

There is an opportunity this week to comment through the Legislative Council’s Office. Please join us in this ACTION and feel free to forward the ACTION to others.

While there is much value in Bill 404 Energy Reform (2024) Act, to retain the current prohibition of nuclear power plants in NS the following Clauses 52 and 75(b) of Bill 404 must be removed.

CLAUSE 52: Clause 8(1)(a) of Chapter 8 of the Acts of 1992, the Nova Scotia Power Privatization Act, is amended by striking out "and the Company shall not construct a generating plant that utilizes nuclear energy to produce electricity".

CLAUSE 75(b): Removes the prohibition on nuclear energy plants from the Public Utilities Act .

Just days after the government scrapped the Coastal Protection Act, site markers for construction appeared perilously close to Little Crescent Beach.
Who is The developer building there? The same friend of the premier who sold Hogan Court to the province.

Misogyny is so ingrained. It’s all around us. It affects the work our MLAs do every day as a majority women and gender-diverse caucus. And as MLA Susan Leblanc said yesterday, it’s often exhausting.

NDP Status of Women spokesperson Suzy Hansen - MLA for Halifax Needham made the following statement for International Women’s Day:
🧡“International Women’s Day is a global day to recognize and celebrate women and girls' social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It's also an important time to raise awareness of the progress made toward achieving gender equity and the work that remains.

This year’s theme “Inspire Inclusion” asks us to imagine a gender-equal world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where differences are valued and celebrated.
The NDP Caucus is committed to building pathways to inclusion for Nova Scotian women and gender-diverse people through wage equity, affordable childcare, access to timely healthcare, and affordable housing options. Our caucus has a solid record of working toward inclusion with the election of women and gender-diverse people to office and we will continue this work for all Nova Scotian Women.”

The public and the whole democratic process has been let down by this system that allows laws passed by the legislation to go un-enacted indefinitely. It would be pretty simple to have a rule that any piece of legislation that has not come into force by a certain period has to come back to the House of Assembly. https://www.nsndp.ca/houston-abandoning-coastal-protection-act-bad-move-democracy

😳 Tim Houston continues to govern this province in the interest of his friends. He doesn't like being asked tough questions about it.
Clearly, it's a touchy subject for him.

The government has abandoned the Coastal Protection Act and abandoned their responsibility to protect our coasts.

Today the Nova Scotia NDP introduced a bill requiring the government to bring laws like the Coastal Protection Act back to the legislature if they aren’t enacting them.

Nova Scotians are struggling as the cost of living rises. It shouldn't be this hard.
With last week's budget, the Houston government missed an important opportunity to give families a break.
