COLDWELL LUNDAR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR 2026

CLCF held its annual granting event April 11 th at the Lundar Lutheran Church Hall with approximately 30 people in attendance. This event is open to the public and provides an opportunity for the community to learn about all the good work that is being done by local organizations and what new projects or programs they are undertaking this year.

Granting is made possible thanks to these four unrestricted funds: The Paul & Ollie Johnson Fund, the Sweetland Family Memorial Fund, the David & Patricia Sigfusson Memorial Fund and the Coldwell Community Foundation Endowment Fund.

New this year, and every year going forward, is a grant made available to all Manitoba foundations from a fund that has been established at The Winnipeg Foundation named the Thomas Sill Manitoba Fund and its purpose is to support foundations with their community granting. Together, with the above four funds, grants were able to be awarded to 10 charities as follows:

--$ 3,000 Clarkleigh United Church: Assist with replacing the church roof shingles.

--$ 4,000 Lundar Agricultural Society: Assist with the purchase of ride-on lawn mower, grass trimmer and stock panels.

--$12,828 Lundar Community Swimming Pool: for purchase of a larger heat pump and paint to repaint the pool liner.

--$ 3,360 Lundar Community Resource Council: to purchase and install handrail for stability along sidewalk out to garden boxes and rest area.

--$ 1,000 Lundar Gymnastics Club: to upgrade stairwell access to their class space at the curling rink.

--$10,000 Lakeshore School Division/Lundar Hockey Academy: to assist with creating a second classroom and storage room at the Lundar Memorial Arena.

--$750 Lundar Minor Ball: purchase netting for batting cage at Lundar ball diamonds.

--$2,000 Lundar Minor Hockey: to purchase a permanent water refill station at Lundar Memorial Arena.

$2,117 Pauline Johnson Library: to renovate the kitchenette area.

$3,000 Grettir Co-op Inc.: to assist with purchase of mini stick arena & play structure in Lundar Arena.

The CLCF’s 5 named funds received their annual fund interest in the form of grants:
--$4,267 David & Patricia Sigfusson Lundar Memorial Arena Maintenance Fund – arena maintenance.

--$1,632 Lundar Museum Society Heritage Fund - for museum upkeep.
--$181 Diane Jacobs Walking Trail Fund (RM of Coldwell) – for trail maintenance.
--$267 Lundar Heritage Park Fund (RM of Coldwell) – for park upkeep.
--$1,153 Myrtle Smith Memorial Fund – for maintenance of Eriksdale United Church.

This is the first season for the Lundar Kodiaks high school hockey team. This picture was taken following their third-place finish at the Edward Schreyer Barons tournament in Beausejour earlier this winter. Way to go!

The Coldwell Lundar Community Foundation was pleased to provide a grant in 2025 to help pay for their new uniforms. All the best for a great season. 🏒🥅

🌺 COLDWELL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS OF 2025

After 20 years of Incorporation, the Coldwell Community Foundation has found a home, renting office space in the Pauline Johnson Library on Main Street in Lundar as of June 1, 2025. It is a wonderful location, easily visible and accessible to the public.

This will enable the foundation to better engage with their donors, meet with prospective donors, present and potential fund holders and provide an opportunity for the public to stop by for coffee and learn more about their foundation.

This has been a positive step forward for the Foundation. Former Lundarite, Donald K. Johnson donated money to build the Pauline Johnson Library and in 2010, he launched the Foundation’s endowment fund with a gift of $25,000 and now the two charities are together under the same roof! It truly is a beautiful story!

Two new funds have been established with the foundation in 2025:

The Johann & Helga Sigurdson Scholarship Fund was created by the family in honour of their mother Helga’s 105th birthday in July and in recognition of their parent’s many contributions to the Lundar community over the years. Education was important and a high priority in the Sigurdson household thus influencing the creation of the scholarship fund. Beginning in June, an annual scholarship will be awarded at the Lundar high school graduation to a student pursuing post-secondary education.

The Sveinbjorn & Mary Olafson Family Fund was created by family members in the fall of 2025 and is open to receiving donations. The goal for this fund is to begin awarding an annual scholarship at the Lundar high school graduation beginning in 2027. Details of the fund and scholarship are being developed and will be forthcoming.

A gift of $50,000 was received in September from Mr. Richard Hughes, former owner of Portage CFRY radio station. In his letter, he said that the gift “was in recognition and support CFRY received from the area served by your foundation.” The support this area has given CFRY over the years has come back to our community in such an impactful way and will forever help support annual granting!

In October, the Lundar Co-op Senior Citizen Home approached the Foundation for possible support for an emergency that surfaced and needed immediate attention prior to winter. Their door locking system needed an upgrade – it was outdated, unreliable and posed a huge risk to the safety and lives of the Home’s residents, and even more so with winter fast approaching.

Due to generous admin. support received throughout the year, there was a surplus in the Foundation budget of $5,000 that was able to be granted for their project. Shortly thereafter, it was discovered that a $10,000 Foundation grant that had been awarded to another community group in March could not be claimed because their project was being delayed until 2026.

Rather than having the funds remain idle in the account until the next granting cycle in February, the $10,000 was reallocated to further support this project, almost in its entirety and installation of the new computerized door monitoring system was completed in time for winter. The Lundar Co-op Senior Citizen Home has been under extensive renovations and upgrades over this past while and is looking fantastic. The board is to be commended for their hard work and dedication to the upkeep and maintenance of this beautiful facility in our community.

The Coldwell Community Foundation’s 2025 Annual Report will be available for distribution at the 2026 granting event planned for April 11th at 2:00pm at the Lutheran Church Hall. All are welcome to attend and see what new projects are being planned in our community for this year.

The love of hockey was evident from the time the Lundar Hockey Academy students got their equipment on. It was the Reds vs the Blues. We were fortunate to have Riley Johnson as the referee for the game. Coach for the Blue Team was Tyler Medeiros and coaches for the Red Team were Brad and Diana Drews.

The Middle Years students were in attendance from Eriksdale School to cheer on their peers. As well, Alice Atkinson, Wendy Sweetland Budge and Patty Johnson from the Coldwell Lundar Community Foundation, Inc (CLCF) were pleased to join students, family and friends to watch the hockey academy students play a final hockey game before the season ended.

The player's focused on their skating, passing, and shooting to score. The goaltenders were tested; many shots were saved and others sneaked by into the nets. There was real team work on the ice. The players were well coordinated as they exchanged places to and from the benches.

The Foundation members got a chance to speak with Tyler and Brad about the Hockey Academy and the upcoming addition of classroom space to accommodate more students next year. The passion and commitment by the staff as well as the students was great to experience.

On the web, Dan Sullivan provides the 4C Formula for winning in hockey and in life: Commitment, Courage, Capability and Confidence. This was definitely evident by all in the Lundar Hockey Academy.

On behalf of all of us at CLCFoundation, we wish you all the best as you finish off the 2025-26 year. ~ CLCF Secretary, Patty Johnson
