Thunderstorm Safety tips from Huron-Kinloss Fire & Emergency Services

Storms can develop quickly—being prepared helps protect your home, property, and loved ones.

⚡ Power surges from lightning strikes can damage your home electronics. Be prepared by using surge protectors that automatically shut off power during surges.

🌬️ Strong winds can cause serious injuries and property damage. Be prepared by removing dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall.

🌩️ During a thunderstorm, take shelter in enclosed buildings, metal-topped vehicles, or low-lying areas if you're outdoors.

🚫 Avoid bodies of water, high ground, isolated trees, power lines, and picnic shelters during thunderstorms.

⏱️ After the storm, wait at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before heading back outside.

🔥🌊 Planning a Beach Fire in Huron-Kinloss? Here’s what you need to know:

Beach fires are a great way to cook or stay warm by the lake—but they do require a permit and must follow specific safety regulations:

✅ Permits are available to Township property owners or tenants only
✅ Fires must be in approved pits (dug into sand, stone/masonry rings, or pre-made containers)
✅ Fires must not exceed 1m x 1m x 1m
✅ No fires when winds exceed 16 km/h
✅ Firewood only – no leaves or prohibited materials
✅ Keep at least 3m away from buildings, dry grass, or vegetation
✅ Fires must be supervised by an adult at all times
✅ Have water, sand, or a fire extinguisher on hand
✅ Respect the beach—no fires on dunes or in pedestrian areas
✅ Fully extinguish fires, clean up, and cover with sand when done
✅ Take all personal belongings with you when you leave, including fire containers, tools, and chairs

Let’s keep our beaches safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Burn Permit Holders: Calling Fire Dispatch Is No Longer Required

If you have an approved Open‑Air Fire Permit, you no longer need to call Fire Dispatch before starting your burn.

In the past, permit holders were required to call before burning. This step has been removed under the Township’s amended Open‑Air Burning By-law (December 2025).

You still must:
✔ Have an approved permit — this is your approval to burn
✔ Post a “Controlled Burn in Progress” sign visible from the roadway
✔ Follow all safety and setback requirements
