Please note and share.
For clarity, Sackville Lakes Provincial Park includes the trail section from Sucker Brook Road along First Lake to the Eddie Leblanc ballfield.
The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.

"The Province is restricting travel and activities in the woods because continued hot, dry conditions have greatly increased the risk of wildfires.

The restrictions, effective as of 4 p.m. today, August 5, include:

hiking, camping, fishing and the use of vehicles in the woods are not permitted
trail systems through woods are off limits
camping is allowed only in campgrounds.
These and other measures are in place on provincial Crown and private land until October 15 or until conditions allow them to be lifted. The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.

“Conditions continue to be extremely dry. Until we get a significant amount of rain, we’re at an elevated risk of wildfires,” said Premier Tim Houston. “Most wildfires are caused by human activity, so to reduce the risk, we’re keeping people out of the woods until conditions improve. I’m asking everyone to do the right thing – don’t light that campfire, stay out of the woods and protect our people and communities.”"

Congratulations to my former Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative (NSPC) MLA colleagues elect, new NSPC MLA elects and leader Premier Tim Houston on such a decisive 2024 Nova Scotia Provincial general election result.

In 2018 I decided to run in the 2019 Sackville - Cobequid by-election - the very first for the new leader of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party and Leader of the Official Opposition Tim Houston - I believed he was the right person to lead Nova Scotia. I made the commitment to run in 2019 and run again to help form a NSPC majority government - I fulfilled my promise in 2021 consequently not reoffering and retiring four years after my 2020 original plan.

Premier Houston lived up to my expectation and I know first hand he is “Making it Happen”… and will continue to do so for Nova Scotians.

Thanks to all who ran in this election whether for the first time or not.

I know and worked with all the MLAs who reoffered and were not reelected. Thank you for your service to your constituents and all Nova Scotians. You are among the very few Nova Scotians ever privileged by the people with such a responsibility.

I especially thank the Sackville - Cobequid candidates and their teams for participating in this very important democratic process.

Congratulations to MLA elect Paul Wozney and his team. And a heartfelt thanks to Paul Russell and his team. I’ve offered and am available to help with the transition of the Sackville - Cobequid MLA Constituency Office to the new MLA to make it easier for him and the Sackville - Cobequid constituents.

I’ve been an elected official, both
municipally and provincial since 2012 - some 12 years. Before that I was retired for 8 years, after a 30 year career in telecommunications (MT&T, Aliant, Bell Aliant).

I chose political office because it is a hard fought right and duty to be able to step up and get involved on behalf of our fellow citizens for self governance.

Municipally I served along with Mayor Mike Savage as Halifax Regional Municipality Councillor in District 15, Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Police Commission, and then with Premier Tim Houston as Member of the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly for Sackville Cobequid and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Premier Tim Houston’s Executive Council of Nova Scotia (Cabinet).

I’ve been honoured and privileged to step up in our democracy to do the best I can to help all with the numerous and complex opportunities and challenges facing us.

Since 2019 I’ve stated I am leaving elected political life after my second provincial election. It should come as no surprise.

I am 69 and will be 70 on my next birthday.

My greatest thanks is to the residents and citizens I’ve tried to help to the best of my ability whether individually or collectively. I want to assure you that your thoughts, opinions and beliefs were always heard and understood. I accept that agreement nor acceptance by all with my positions or decisions was always accepted or understood. Our citizens do not agree individually nor collectively on everything. This is our democratic system.

I have great love and respect for my Dad who served and fought for Canada and other nations in World War 2 (WWII) and the Korean Conflict. He taught me that our democracy is such that we do not get everything we want when we want, however we do have the freedom to express our democratic rights and freedoms without fear of government suppression.

Thank you all for your participation in our free and democratic society with its rights and freedoms.

I do not know what the future looks like. I do believe though that collectively we will be the best we can be.

Steve

COMMUNITY SERVICES--Tiny Home Community Prepares to Welcome First Residents
---------------------------------------------------------
Nova Scotia’s first tiny home community will begin welcoming residents the first week of November.

“Homelessness is a complex issue, and no single organization can solve it alone," said Brendan Maguire, Minister of Community Services. “The tiny home community in Lower Sackville shows what’s possible when government, the private sector and not-for-profit partners collaborate on innovative solutions to get people housed and on the path to permanent stability.”

The Province, Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), United Way Halifax, The Shaw Group and Dexter Construction partnered to build the community.

It will provide supportive housing for up to 70 people in 60 single- and double-occupancy units. Each unit is fully furnished, with a private washroom with a shower, and a kitchen with a fridge, microwave, cooktop and other small appliances. Fully accessible units are available.

There are currently 26 single-occupancy and four double-occupancy units available, providing housing for up to 34 people. Another 29 units will be completed in December, housing another 35 people.

Utilities (including electricity, water and internet), bedding and towels are included, and residents have access to shared computers and office and laundry facilities. United Way Halifax owns the units, co-ordinates amenities and is responsible for maintenance and property management.

The Atlantic Community Shelters Society provides wraparound supports including counselling, job search supports and referrals, and life skills training.

Rent is capped at 30 per cent of a tenant’s income, which could include employment earnings or support from government programs such as employment insurance, income assistance and disability supports.

Quotes:
“Atlantic Community Shelters Society is committed to creating lasting solutions for those facing housing insecurity. This project goes beyond offering someone a place to live – it provides a pathway to stability, dignity and a renewed sense of belonging. By addressing homelessness in a compassionate and sustainable way, we are helping to build a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone.”
— Joe Rudderham, Executive Director, Atlantic Community Shelters Society

“United Way Halifax, part of United Way Maritimes, is pleased to be the owner and property manager of the Sackville tiny homes community. This will ensure we can offer high-quality housing that is deeply and sustainably affordable. These are welcoming, dignified and safe homes, which will create the housing stability people need to get back on their feet and plan for their future.”
— Sue LaPierre, Senior Executive Director, Nova Scotia & Affordable Housing, United Way Maritimes

“The Shaw Group is proud to have built and help bring the vision of a tiny home community to life. It shows what’s possible when builders and community organizations collaborate to address homelessness with practical, lasting solutions.”
— Kevin Neatt, Vice-President, Planning and Development, Clayton Developments Ltd. and The Shaw Group

Quick Facts:
- the Province provided $9.4 million in the fall of 2023 for construction costs and has committed $935,000 for annual operating costs
- residents have been chosen from the HRM By-Name List of people experiencing homelessness, maintained by the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia
- the Department is working to create 1,085 supportive housing units by 2027-28
- The Shaw Group committed to building 21 units in Phase 1, but delivered 31 units
- the Atlantic Community Shelters Society also operates the shelter village in Dartmouth
