St. Peters Canal is an 800 meter canal linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Bras d'Or Lakes. Work started on the canal in 1854 and was completed in 1869. View interpretive exhibits, enjoy a picnic lunch, or experience the canal by pleasure craft. Peter's was th

e site of Fort Saint-Pierre, a 17th century fortified trading post acquired by Nicolas Denys in 1650 to trade with the Mi’kmaq. It was also the site of Port Toulouse, a French community with a military presence that bore witness to the Anglo-French rivalry during the period 1713 and 1758.

St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site is surrounded by both the Bras d’Or Lake and the Atlantic Ocean! 💙

Did you know that both the ocean and lakeside of the canal experience tidal activity?

During tidal periods, water levels can differ up to 1.4 m (4.5 ft) between the lake and ocean sides. This is why both entrances have double gate locks to accommodate the significant change in water level. 🌊 ↕️ 🔒

On November 11, Canada observes Remembrance Day to pay tribute to the generations of members of the armed forces who served, and their families, so that the values they fought for continue to live on in all Canadians.

Today, we give thanks to those who have answered the call of duty and honour the memory of all those who have contributed to military efforts at home and overseas. We invite you to reflect on their stories of courage, resilience and strength by learning more about the brave people whose service has shaped Canada’s history.
