Peaceful Parks has suspended activity on Facebook because of its ban on Canadian news stories. We cannot share news articles where we have been mentioned. We are also suspending activity on Facebook because of Mark Zuckerberg's close ties to the Trump administration, and are participating in a new call from south of the border to walk away from 'tech' companies.

This is a consumer focused action against the giant tech companies.

Rarely, do we consider the 'guts' of how this technology is fueled. We may believe everything is up in the clouds, but it is not. Large data centres to fuel AI systems use a tremendous amount of energy, so much so, that its use is being subsidized by everyday people through prices increases on their electricity bills.

Peaceful Parks will now only be sending out newsletters and action alerts through email. Please send us an email, if you wish to stay in touch. [email protected]

Point Pelee National Park is currently killing their resident deer herd and the park is closed. Point Pelee NP kills a lot of native wildlife. The park is groomed for bird watchers. It is a birding mecca, every spring and fall, bringing in $$$ for the national park. Parks Canada maintains the park in an artificial state of greenery just for this purpose.

Point Pelee is dyked at its northern edge and is a natural sand spit. If left to its natural state, the park would likely revert to a savannah dune ecosystem - a system that is endangered in North America.

Point Pelee also kills hundreds of nesting Double Crested Cormorants. Other than the sand spit at the tip of the park, Point Pelee is boring. No reason to visit.

Sept. 27th 2024

September 27th is considered to be the largest single bird migration flight of the fall season. Here is what Doug Ford did for Double-crested Cormorants. Please see attached photos. There are groups of nasty slob hunters that hunt in southern Ontario. Please see attached photos from the page Ontario Cormorant Hunters.

We would appreciate if local citizens could pin-point exactly where thes hunters gather, as we would appreciate being able to protest in these areas.

The only way to stop this corrupt govt. is to vote Doug Ford out of office. The only way to vote Doug Ford out of office is to vote your local PC MPP out of office. Ontarians do not vote for their Premier directly.

Ontario Parks - Just A Bunch of Bold Faced Liars

Bigwind Lake Provincial Park

As of today, Ontario Parks has yet to post a decision on the Environmental Registry (ERO) regarding a massive development at Bigwind Lake PP - currently a tiny pristine non-operating park for a quiet nature experience.

A local reporter suggested that Ontario Parks has indeed decided to move forward with the massive development of Bigwind, but stated that Ontario Parks will post their decision AFTER the development is completed. Peaceful Parks stated that they would document the destruction of a natural park, and in that spirit, local residents went and took a look, and indeed construction has begun in the park. Ontario Parks also appear to be blocking the main road into the park to prevent visitors from using the park.

What a bunch of bold faced liars just like their boss Doug Ford. Just read the response below from senior staff, Joslyn Spurgeon happily lying about the fate of Bigwind. This development is being pushed by the Town of Bracebridge hoping that the RVs that will roll into Bigwind will stop and fuel up in the town of Bracebridge. Such a pathetic way of making money. Obviously, the town of Bracebridge has bigger problems if they need to destroy a small pristine park to bolster their economy.

The email below was forwarded to PPC.
Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for your interest in the Bigwind Lake Provincial Park proposal. Comments received on the preliminary management plan are still under consideration. A decision has not been made on whether to proceed with the project.

Would you like me to add your email address to the project mailing list so that you receive future project updates directly?

Thanks,

Subject: decision?

The press is reporting a decision has already been made on whether to move ahead with development plans for Bigwind Lake PP. Can you please confirm that Doug Ford has made a final decision on the development of Bigwind Lake PP. If so, why hasn't it been posted on the ERO?

Thank You

Carolyn.

A large colony of nesting birds is a spectacular site, and Toronto is lucky to have one right on its waterfront. If you visit the colony, please show courtesy to the birds because you are witness a natural nursery. Disturbing nesting activities results in parents flying off and their clutch susceptible to predators.

Officials with the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority (TRCA) say an effort to remove thousands of cormorants from the Toronto Islands was going well until two bald eagles showed up over the winter.

Though it is considered a milestone for the bald eagles to call Centre Island home, the population of cormorants has doubled this summer.

The TRCA has been trying to safely move cormorants off the island and back to their home at Tommy Thompson Park, but because eagles are sensitive to humans, they had to create a 100-metre buffer from the eagle’s nest and stop using tools to relocate the cormorants.

“We had a plan for 2024 to triple our resources and really try to ensure that we minimize cormorant nesting at Toronto Island Park, but in the winter, when the cormorants were down south, a pair of bald eagles decided to take over a cormorant nest,” said Karen McDonald, the TRCA’s Senior Manager of Ecosystem Management.

“We are not going to take a nest count until the leaves fall off during the fall, but we estimate there is a nest count of about 2,000 [cormorants] near this eagle nest.”

Large population of cormorants a problem for Toronto Islands?
Cormorants are medium to large birds with long bodies and necks found in freshwater and marine environments worldwide. They feed on fish and nest in colonies, often on cliffs, islands, or trees near water.

You don’t need to travel far through the Toronto Islands to catch a glimpse of these birds that have completely taken over.

“Cormorants are interesting birds as they kill the trees in which they nest. A few actions kill the trees, notably their guano or droppings, which are very acidic,” McDonald said. “Killing the trees and stopping them from growing; when they are all nesting in one location and pooping in one location, you can imagine the smell is not pleasant.”

Officials from the Toronto Regional Conversation Authority (TRCA) say an effort to remove thousands of cormorants from the Toronto Islands was going well until two bald eagles showed up over the winter.
Some experts, like Gail Fraser from the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University, believe the large presence of cormorants is a good thing.

“I like to think about the presence of cormorants, which means that there’s a pretty healthy ecosystem supporting them,” she said.

“I’ve seen boaters come right up to the colony. They get on to the colony while the birds are nesting. I’ve seen windsails come by. If we want the birds to return to Tommy Thompson Park, we also need to manage the waters around the park to reduce the amount of human disturbances.”

McDonald said that the bald eagles had two healthy, flying eaglets, that the birds responded well, and that their efforts to remove the cormorants safely were not affected.

The TRCA will be more aggressive in relocating the birds back to Tommy Thompson Park, and they hope to have their numbers reduced by next year.

We need to vote Doug Ford out of office.

The group Ontario Place Protectors has won an injunction preventing any more work from being done at Ontario Place until a court hearing can be held on July 19 over the Ford government's Rebuilding Ontario Place Act.

Ontario’s mining law and its system for registering mining claims have allowed thousands of claims to be staked on a northwestern First Nation without consultation or consent, the community alleges in a constitutional challenge announced Friday.

The Grassy Narrows First Nation, north of Kenora, Ont., is asking the court to declare that the province has a duty to consult and obtain its informed consent before registering or renewing mining claims on an area of its territory, and that the government has breached those duties.

It is also seeking an order that would halt all current and planned mining projects in the area until proper consultation takes place and consent is given.

If successful, the legal action could require the province to rescind thousands of existing mining claims the First Nation says have been staked on its lands without consultation or consent — and set a precedent that would affect mining projects throughout the province, according to Grassy Narrows.

New Impact Assessment Act Becomes Law

The Budget Implementation Act, which included necessary changes to the Impact Assessment Act, has received royal assent, clearing the way for the federal government to redesignate Highway 413.

Some people have the mistaken impression that the Canada-Ontario Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) makes it impossible to redesignate Hwy 413. But, the MOU clearly maintains the federal government's power to designate the 413 scheme for a full federal assessment, stating that the federal government does not give up "any jurisdiction, right, power, privilege, prerogative or immunity by virtue of this Memorandum of Understanding or any subsidiary agreements resulting therefrom..."

If you've ever reached out to your MP on this issue, this is a great time to ask for an update on their plans to protect endangered species from Highway 413.
