June is National PTSD Awareness Month.

Behind every call, every emergency, and every act of service, there are experiences that can leave lasting scars. For firefighters and other first responders, not all injuries are visible.

PTSD can affect anyone. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By talking openly, supporting one another, and reducing stigma, we can ensure that no member has to face their struggles alone.

If you are struggling, reach out. If a colleague is struggling, check in. One conversation can make a difference.

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of the tragic loss of the Afzaal family, who were killed in a horrific act of Islamophobic hatred. As we remember their lives, we are reminded that hate has no place in our community.

Together, we stand for compassion, inclusion, and respect for all.

🚒 Supporting Those Who Serve and Protect Canada

Every day, firefighters and other first responders put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe. When tragedy strikes, the families of fallen responders deserve meaningful support, and our communities deserve the training and resources needed to be prepared for emergencies.

The IAFF is calling on the federal government to:
✅ Increase and index the Memorial Grant Program for First Responders to ensure families of fallen members receive support that keeps pace with inflation.
✅ Expand HazMat and emergency response training for firefighters and first responders.
✅ Invest in emergency preparedness to help communities respond to growing threats such as wildfires, hazardous materials incidents, and other disasters.

We encourage our members, families, and supporters to learn more about these important initiatives and the work being done to strengthen public safety across Canada.

Flashback Friday – May 29, 2018

Eight years ago this week, London firefighters responded to one of the city’s most memorable commercial fires as flames consumed the former Hook’s Restaurant at Wharncliffe & Southdale. A landmark that had served Londoners for decades was lost, but thanks to the efforts of responding crews, there were no reported injuries.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

We spend our careers looking out for others, but sometimes we forget to check in on ourselves.

Life can get heavy. The calls, the stress, family responsibilities, work pressures, and everything in between can take a toll. It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to ask for help.

This month is a reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health. A simple conversation, a phone call, or checking in on a friend can make a bigger difference than you realize.

Take care of yourself. Look out for one another. And remember - you never have to carry the weight alone.
