Earlier this week, we shared tips on building your emergency kit. Today, we're reminding you not to forget an important part of your family - your pets!

Your emergency plan should include your furry family members too. Make sure you have:
- food and water for at least 72 hours
- a leash or carrier
- medications and important records
- a familiar toy or blanket to keep them calm

Looking for help getting started? The Ontario SPCA has great free resources, including a 72-hour emergency preparedness workbook: https://ontariospca.ca/pet-emergency-preparedness/

In Kawartha Lakes, we’ve seen how quickly things can change, from ice storms and flooding, to power outages and wildfires. Being ready ahead of time can make a big difference.

One simple step you can take today? Build an emergency kit. Make sure you have enough supplies for at least 72 hours for everyone in your household.

Annual April Burn Ban in Effect

Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service has issued the annual April burn ban, effective 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

During this period:

• All Regular Annual Burn Permits are suspended

• Agricultural and Special Burn Permits may still be considered, with strict adherence to safety requirements

“Even if there’s still snow on the ground or the potential for localized flooding in certain areas, dry grass and debris can catch fire very easily in April. The annual April burn ban helps protect the community and our firefighters,” said Fire Chief Terry Jones.

Under Section 8.03 of By-Law 2016-110, individuals who violate the burn ban may face charges under the Provincial Offences Act and may be held responsible for all fire suppression costs.

Residents can check the status of the burn ban by calling 1-888-822-2225 or by visiting the Burn Ban and Permits page on the municipal website.

The burn ban may be extended beyond April if conditions remain unfavourable for open-air burning. Residents will be notified through news releases and social media when the burn ban is lifted.

Thank you for helping keep Kawartha Lakes safe.

🚒 Fire Chief for a Day! 👩‍🚒

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Georgia MacInnes, a Grade 3 student from Queen Victoria Public School, as our Fire Chief for a Day through the United Way Haliburton Kawartha Lakes online auction fundraiser.

Georgia’s day began with a surprise pick-up from her school by our Station 1 crew in Lindsay, where her classmates gathered to wave her off. From there, she headed to Fire Service Headquarters to take part in the morning routine. Georgia completed a radio check with dispatch and assisted with a full truck inspection to make sure all lights, tools, and equipment were ready to respond.

She then met with Doug Elmslie - Mayor of Kawartha Lakes and CAO Ron Taylor for a meet and greet and photo opportunity in Council Chambers. While there, Georgia sat in the Fire Chief’s chair and made her first request, two new fire trucks.

On the way back to the station, Georgia stopped at Kawartha Lakes Police Service Headquarters. She toured the facility, visited dispatch to learn about 9-1-1 communications, met members from different divisions, explored the holding cells, and checked out a police sergeant’s cruiser.

Back at Fire Headquarters, Georgia toured the station, met administrative staff, and spent time in the Fire Chief’s office. She then took part in hands-on firefighter activities including search and rescue, a rescue dummy drag, practicing spraying water, and participating in fire extinguisher training. She also explored the fire trucks and equipment and tried on firefighter gear.

The day wrapped up with lunch alongside Fire Chief Terry Jones.

Georgia has been attending our fire safety programs since she was five years old and has always had an interest in the fire service. Today confirmed that becoming a firefighter is her goal for the future.

A big thank you to the United Way Haliburton Kawartha Lakes for organizing this fundraiser and helping make experiences like this possible.

We hope to see you again soon, Chief Georgia! 🚒
