Thank you to all who sent in photos of the amazing afternoon with Matt the Birdman. Here is Charlie with a Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis) on his head and a little boy with an owl and Skyler with the glove on her arm and a Harris's hawk (Parabuteo unicinctusunicinctus). I am sure they will never forget that.

Did you know that raptors are often called "ecosystem health indicators"?
🧐When we see healthy populations of hawks, falcons, and owls, it tells us that our forests and wetlands are thriving. We are thrilled to host Matt the Birdman this Saturday, May 16th, for an educational showcase that brings you face-to-beak with these incredible predators.
This is a fantastic opportunity for families to practice inquiry-based learning—bring your curious questions about habitat, conservation, and the "superpowers" of birds of prey!

We can't wait to see you 🦉🍃

Matt the Birdman will be back at Gamiing Nature Centre. He clearly understands that the best way to foster a love for nature is through that direct, "heart-in-throat" connection. Giving a child a glove and a memory they’ll carry for a lifetime is how the next generation of conservationists is born.
Event Details at a Glance
If you are planning to head out or telling friends, here is the quick breakdown:
• Location: Gamiing Nature Centre
• Date: Saturday, May 16
• Time: Noon through the afternoon
• The Experience: Up-close encounters with various raptors (young and old) and interactive demonstrations.
Why Experiences Like This Matter
• Tactile Learning: For a child, reading about a hawk’s talons is one thing; seeing the grip on their own gloved hand is another entirely.
• Respect for Wildlife: Matt’s long-term commitment to Gamiing (15 years!) shows a dedication to teaching people that these aren't just "cool animals," but vital parts of our ecosystem.
• Rain or Shine Resilience: It teaches kids that nature doesn’t stop just because of a little drizzle—often, that’s when the woods are most alive.
Pro Tip: If you're bringing little ones, don't forget your camera! Those "glove moments" make for some of the best photos you'll ever take.

Teaching the Honorable Harvest at Gamiing Nature Centre 🌿
When children join us for our July Summer Day Camp Adventures, they aren’t just "users" of the trails and the fields and the wetland. They are guests of the forest and the fields and the wetland.
One of the core pillars of our way of working with campers is the Honorable Harvest, a set of principles shared by Indigenous peoples (beautifully articulated by Robin Wall Kimmerer) that governs our relationship with the living world.
What does this look like for a camper?
Before we pick a single leaf or move a stone, we share with the children to pause and practice these protocols:
• Ask Permission: We ask the plant or the space if we may take a gift. If the plant is rare or looks stressed, the answer is "no," and we move on.
• Never Take the First: We leave the first one we see to ensure the species continues to thrive.
• Take Only What You Need: We learn the difference between "wanting" and "needing," ensuring there is plenty left for the birds, the insects, and the future.
• Use It Well: If we harvest a cedar branch or a bit of clay, we treat it with respect and ensure nothing goes to waste.
• Give a Gift in Return: Gratitude is a verb! Whether it’s a song, a bit of water, or helping to clear a trail, we always give back to the land that sustains us.
By practicing the Honorable Harvest, our campers move from "consuming" nature to "belonging" to it. It builds a foundation of stewardship that lasts a lifetime.
Want your child to learn the language of the land this July? Registration is open .
Email [email protected] and we send you an information and registration package.
Psss, our website is live, but there are still pieces missing, such as the links to the camps and events. We are working on it......!!🔗

We are thrilled to announce a very special guest and friend of Gamiing for our spring lineup! In the heart of winter, we visited Matt at his home in Kilworthy, ON, and we are so happy to report that he is recovering well from his recent illness and is ready to get back to what he does best.
