In a cynical new plan, BC Premier David Eby plans to sidestep First Nations and “temporarily” suspend DRIPA, which he will be gambling his government on in a confidence vote. This is unacceptable. DRIPA and Indigenous Rights are not a threat to our province, and never have been. The real threat is the Anti-Indiginous hatred and fearmongering being brought to the forefront of our politics and daily life in this province by the far-right.
David Eby’s team has completely missed the mark and crossed a red line with this abhorrent new plan. As New Democrats, we stand with Indigenous peoples all across Canada, and always will continue to do so.
For that reason, we call on Premier David Eby to resign as leader of the BC NDP, along with any staff, consultants, advisors, and anyone else associated with his time as leader. This period of the party has been marred by scandal, capitulation, and shame, outweighing the positive wins New Democrats have achieved in Victoria.
This will trigger a BC NDP Leadership Election. This request to step down is not to say that Premier Eby can’t run again as leader, that’s up to him, but this will instead give every BC NDP member the chance to choose the direction of our party and province before British Columbia is flung into an unwanted election on an issue that backstabs First Nations, who we need to work with, not sidestep, even when inconvenient for the government.
We demand moral clarity and a voice. This is what British Columbians want. This is what Indigenous leaders want. This is what New Democrats want. And expect.
Do you think Premier Eby should step down as BC NDP leader?
