BBQ season is here, but it’s important to stay safe every time you grill, especially on balconies and near buildings.

✅ Grill outdoors only, never indoors or in enclosed spaces
✅ Keep grills well away from walls, railings & overhangs
✅ Check gas hoses and connections for leaks (soap + water = bubbles = leak)
✅ Keep children & pets at least 3 ft (1 m) away
✅ Clean grease buildup regularly to prevent flare-ups
🚫 Many multi-unit buildings restrict BBQ use on balconies, always check your strata or building rules first
🚨 Smell gas? Move away immediately and call 9-1-1

A few simple precautions can prevent a serious fire. Grill safely and enjoy the season!

Given the shift weather BC Wildfire has amended the prohibitions issued last week. The most current information can be found on the BC Wildfire Service website.

We hope everyone has a great long weekend, as always be safe!

Current and forecast conditions have shifted since the Coastal Fire Centre initially implemented the Category 1 campfire prohibition earlier this May, resulting in cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard throughout the region. Because of this, Category 1 campfires will be once again permitted under the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction as of Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. (noon).

Although the fire risk has decreased for the region, human-caused wildfires are still possible and entirely preventable. Please take the time to learn how to enjoy a campfire safely: gov.bc.ca/saferburning

Category 2 and 3 open burning and select activities and equipment remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. For full details, please refer to the following information bulletin: https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/campfires-permitted-across-coastal-fire-centre-due-to-decreased-fire-risk/

Home fires can become life-threatening in as little as 2–3 minutes.

Home fire sprinklers can:
🔥 Control or extinguish a fire early
⏱️ Give you more time to escape
🚒 Reduce risk before firefighters arrive

When combined with working smoke alarms, they provide critical protection when seconds matter most.

Building or renovating? Consider including home fire sprinklers.

Let’s clear up a few common myths about home fire sprinklers:

🚫 They activate from smoke
✅ They activate from heat

🚫 All sprinklers go off at once
✅ Only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates

🚫 They cause major water damage
✅ They use far less water than fire hoses

Fire sprinklers are designed to control fires quickly, helping reduce damage and improve safety.

May 10 - 16 is Home Fire Sprinkler Week!

Did you know home fire sprinklers activate automatically in the early stages of a fire? They respond to heat, not smoke and only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates.

✔️ Fast response
✔️ Controls fire growth
✔️ Helps protect lives and property

As we enter wildfire season, Category 1 - 3 prohibitions are now in effect to help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect our communities, forests, and wildlife.

Effective at 12 p.m. PDT on Thursday, May 7, Category 1, Category 2, and Category 3 open fires are prohibited across the Coastal Fire Centre. The exception is the Haida Gwaii Forest District, where Category 1 campfires are permitted.

These measures are being taken to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires associated with open burning activities.

This prohibition will remain in place until October 31, 2026, or until it is rescinded.

Always check with your local government before burning, as they may have their own prohibitions in place.
