BC Community Response Networks BC CRN is a resource network for responding to abuse, neglect, and self-neglect of vulnerable adults

BC CRN provides small project funding, materials, training, support people and maintains a website to assist CRNs in their work. At the local level, CRNs facilitate prevention and education activities with local stakeholders toward an end to abuse, neglect and self-neglect of adults in BC. In liaising at the provincial level through their Regional Mentors and the Executive Director, CRNs assist in identifying common themes, barriers and issues which require work at the regional, provincial and sometimes national level.

Abuse against men often goes unrecognized, and many men may find it difficult to speak openly about what they're experiencing.

Understanding the barriers men face when seeking help is an important part of preventing abuse and making sure people feel safe reaching out for support.

Join BC CRN for our upcoming Provincial Learning Event, “Understanding Abuse of Men Across the Lifespan, Including Older Adult Men,” to learn more about this often-overlooked issue and how communities can respond with greater awareness and understanding.

Lower lifetime earnings and unequal pension access continue to undermine the financial security of older women across Canada. According to the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) 2025 Ageing in Canada Survey, 24% of women report having inadequate income compared to 19% of men. Furthermore, 23% of older women experience material deprivation compared to 16% of older men. International Longevity Centre Canada advocates for lifelong rights-based income supports and policy reforms to ensure economic equity, dignity, and independence for women at every stage of aging.

Lifetime wage gaps compound into retirement poverty for older women. Life course income supports are essential to guaranteeing equal financial security in later life.

Grandview Towers in Vancouver celebrated National Seniors Day with an afternoon of entertainment, thanks to some talented local volunteers from the Grandview Woodland Community Response Network (CRN).

Residents enjoyed live music and a mixed martial arts demonstration and it was a chance to connect and have some fun.

Received a debit card in the mail that you never applied for?
Don’t activate it.

Fraudsters may use stolen personal information to open bank accounts in someone else’s name, then try to obtain the information they need to access those accounts.

If this happens to you, contact the financial institution directly using the number on its official website. Check your credit reports for accounts you don’t recognize and consider placing a fraud alert on your file. You should also report suspected identity theft to your local police and keep your case number for your records.

Most importantly, never share your PIN, security codes, SIN, or other personal information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Strong connections can help protect older adults from isolation and make it easier to recognize when someone may need support.

Being part of your community creates opportunities to build relationships and have people around who notice when something changes or doesn’t seem right.

When we look out for one another, we help create communities where older adults feel included and safe.

AI is becoming part of everyday life, but how confident do you feel using it, and do you know when to be cautious?

A new free learning program is being introduced across Canada to help people better understand AI. This could be particularly helpful for older adults who want to feel more comfortable with changing technology while staying alert to issues such as privacy and misleading information.

Our latest Technology Tips article explains what the program will offer and how Canadians can access these learning opportunities.

Mount Pleasant CRN brought World Elder Abuse Awareness Day into the community with its “Chalk the Walk for WEAAD” event in June.

Nine local organizations and businesses helped fill neighbourhood sidewalks with messages celebrating older adults and raising awareness about ageism and elder abuse. The project also brought generations together, sparked conversations, and helped connect people with useful resources.

A creative example of what can happen when a community comes together around prevention and awareness.
