Langley City residents are about to get their first HOT weekend of the year! Follow Langley City Emergency Program’s tips to stay safe and cool:

☀️ UV index is highest between 10 am to 4 pm; Take extra care during this period.
💦 Drink plenty of water and consume cool foods like salads, fruits, and vegetables.
🥱 Take it easy with physical activity – rest and relax often, if you feel tired.
🌳 Relax in cool, shaded areas such as City parks.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing.
🌬️ Visit cooler and breezier areas, when outdoors.
❄️ Check out any air-conditioned public spaces such as your local malls, libraries, movie theatres, coffee shops, restaurants, and more.

And if you plan on staying indoors this weekend, remember that high temperatures at home can pose the greatest risk during extreme heat. Consider the below actions:

✔️ Close your blinds to block the sun during the day and open them back up at night to let the heat escape and allow cool air back into the room.
✔️ Take cool showers or mist yourself and your clothing often to prevent overheating.
✔️ Keep cool, drinkable water and ice in your fridge/freezer for drinking, or to use as an ice pack.
✔️ Monitor the indoor temperature with a thermometer.

🌬️ Wind Conditions – Fraser Valley

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Yellow Wind Warning for parts of the Fraser Valley. While the City of Langley is not currently under a wind warning, residents may still experience gusty conditions. These conditions can result in localized disruptions, such as blowing debris or minor tree damage, and isolated power interruptions.

🔎 What to expect:
• Gusty winds that may affect travel and outdoor activities
• Loose objects becoming airborne
• Isolated or short-term power outages

🔋Be prepared for possible outages:
• Charge phones and essential devices
• Have flashlights and extra batteries ready
• Keep a Household Emergency Kit ready with water, food, medications, and first aid supplies
• Check on neighbours who may need assistance

🛡️ Safety reminders:
• Secure loose outdoor items
• Use caution when driving
• Stay informed as conditions change

If you notice downed tree branches or debris that may pose a hazard, please contact City of Langley Operations Centre (Engineering & Parks Operations) during business hours at 📞 604.514.2800 or submit a service request through the City’s Online Request for Service system (RFS.LangleyCity.ca). This helps crews assess and respond as quickly as possible.

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS: Are You Ready?
Disasters don’t wait and you shouldn't either. Now is the time to prepare.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

🏠 FOR RESIDENTS:

1. Create a Household Emergency Plan: Know how to contact family, where to meet if separated, and what to do if utilities are down.

2. Build an Emergency Kit & Grab-&-Go Bag
🧰 Emergency Kit (for home or business): Store enough supplies to last at least 72 hours, including non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, radio, first aid supplies, sanitation items, and basic tools. /🎒 Grab-and-Go Bag (for quick evacuation): Pack essentials like medications, copies of ID, cash, spare keys, phone charger, a change of clothes, snacks, water, and a copy of your emergency plan.

3. Secure Heavy Items: Fasten shelves, TVs, and cabinets to walls. Prevent hazards before they fall.

4. Know How to Shut Off Utilities: Learn how to turn off gas, water, and electricity if needed.

5. Practice “Drop, Cover, Hold On”: Regularly drill this with your household - especially kids!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

🏢 FOR BUSINESSES:

1. Develop a Business Continuity Plan: How will you operate or recover after a disruption?

2. Train Staff on Emergency Roles: Assign floor wardens, first aid leads, and ensure everyone knows what to do.

3. Conduct Regular Drills: Include evacuation routes, muster points, and communication checks.

4. Back Up Critical Data: Ensure backups are stored securely and can be accessed post-disaster.

5. Check Insurance Coverage: Ensure it includes earthquake and interruption coverage.

09/03/2025

Due to current environmental conditions, an Air Quality Warning is in effect for Langley City. The air quality has reached unhealthy levels and everyone is urged to take steps to protect their health - especially children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory and heart conditions.

What you should do:
- Stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows and doors closed.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.
- If you must go outside, consider wearing a mask (such as an N95 mask).
- & check out Langley City’s Cleaner Air Spaces page for more tips!

Don’t forget to check on your neighbours and/or loved ones who may be more vulnerable to poor air quality.

Stay updated by following local air quality reports and health advisories. Even short-term exposure to polluted air can impact your health. Taking these precautions can make a big difference.

What is a "Cleaner Air Space"?Cleaner Air Spaces are indoor spaces that everyone can access. They provide better air quality for people looking for relief during periods of poor air quality, such as when wildfire smoke is present. Emergencies can be confusing and frightening for children. Involving them in emergency preparedness can help them feel safe, confident, and ready. Here are five ways to make emergency preparedness age-appropriate and engaging:

1. Let them help pack their Grab & Go Bag 🎒 This will help them feel more in control and comfortable during uncertain times.
Include:
- Snacks and bottled water
- A flashlight
- First Aid kit
- A comfort item (i.e. stuffed animal or blanket)
- Extra clothes
- Their name and contact information

2. Turn drills into games 🎲 to help children learn emergency procedures in a fun, engaging way that builds confidence and reinforces key safety actions.
Practice:
- Fire escape routes: “Let’s see how fast we can get outside safely!”
- Earthquake safety: “Drop, Cover & Hold On!”
- Emergency contacts: Quiz them gently - “Who do we call if mom’s phone doesn’t work?”

3. Story time with a purpose will help normalize emergency topics in a kid-friendly way 📚 Explore stories about:
- Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers
- Natural disasters, told from a child’s perspective
- Problem-solving and bravery

4. Teach the basics 🧠 so young children have essential information and skills to seek help and stay safe during an emergency, even if adults aren’t immediately available.
Kids of all ages can master:
- Their full name and address
- How to dial 9-1-1 (and when to do it)
- Who their emergency adults are at school or daycare

5. Make a Household Emergency Plan together 🗺️ This ensures everyone in the family knows what to do and where to go during an emergency and will reduce confusion and stress.
Include:
- Meeting place outside your home
- Out-of-area contact phone number
- Who picks them up in an emergency

Preparedness is a family affair, and kids who are involved feel empowered, not panicked. Start small, make it fun, and build confidence!
