Check this video throwback to 2022 when the City first began community engagement into the Parks & Recreation Plan. The plan includes recommedations to be implemented over a 10 year horizon, and we continue to see plans come into play!

From new playgrounds, bike parks, washroom facilities, and sport courts, to outdoor learning facilities, a wildlife viewing platform, and trail connections to the new waterfront multi-use pathway which is due to be complete by January 2028, good things are underway in Colwood.

Kudos to the two classes from Royal Bay Secondary School who joined PICK Colwood for a litter pick on June 8!

PICK reports that:

“The weather cooperated, with the rain holding off until we had finished, allowing students to spend time outdoors doing some real-world, real-time, hands-on citizen science. As they collected and recorded litter, we talked about the many items that turn up in our environment and where they should have ended up instead.

Much of what we found didn't need to become garbage at all. Many items could have been recycled, while others could have been returned for a refund through deposit programs. One of the photos gives a good example. If the plastic lids and drink container had been rinsed out, they could have gone in the mixed materials recycle bin. If the paper packaging was dry and clean, it could have gone in the paper recycling bin. And the black reusable bag could have gone to the textile recycling depot if it was clean and dry. Much of what we found could have been diverted from the landfill, but instead was tossed on the ground.

Thank you to the students and teachers for your enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to make a difference in your community. Every item picked up helps create a cleaner environment, and every observation contributes to a better understanding of the litter challenge we all share.”

Beyond the Curb is now in Colwood!

A new Beyond the Curb Hub is now open, offering a free way for residents to recycle more items closer to home.

At the Colwood Exchange Park & Ride (corner of Island Hwy and Ocean Blvd), you can drop off curbside recycling materials and a variety of specialty recyclables. The hub will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 9am – 4pm.

Our Beyond the Curb Hubs will operate year-round, making it easier to recycle materials and keep them out of the landfill.

City staff members of CUPE local 374 have voted to strike.

The City’s proposal includes pay increases of 10.4% over three years plus enhanced sick leave and increased benefits.

No cuts are proposed; in fact the proposal increases sick leave and adds a flexible Well-being Leave for appointments and personal well-being.

“We deeply value our employees and the critical role they play in serving our community,” said Jason Johnson, Colwood Chief Administrative Officer. “We remain committed to respectful and constructive negotiations as we work to reach an agreement that benefits employees while remaining sustainable for the residents who fund and rely on City services."

Electrification of our fleet and equipment is one of the ways the City of Colwood is working to increase affordability for residents while significantly reducing our climate impact.

And we're not just talking about electric vehicles. 🛻

Our Public Works team has added more than 25 electric tools 🛠️including line trimmers, blowers, hedgers, plate tampers, chainsaws, breakers, generators and mowing equipment. This equipment reduces fuel costs while also making Colwood a quieter and cleaner place to live. Win, win, win.
