What an incredible day yesterday at Mayor for a Day!

A group of excited Grade 6 students had the opportunity to experience what it's like to be Mayor for a Day and learn more about how the City of Lacombe operates.

The day began with a meet-and-greet in Council Chambers, followed by a tour of City Hall and the chance to participate in a mock council meeting. Students also enjoyed lunch with Mayor Hibbs, Chief Dobirstein, and Chief Fleming, where they could ask questions and learn more about local leadership.

One of the highlights of the day was exploring the equipment and vehicles that help keep our community running safely and efficiently, including a police vehicle, public works equipment, and a fire truck.

It was inspiring to see the students' curiosity, thoughtful questions, and excitement as they gained a behind-the-scenes look at municipal government and the many people who serve our community every day.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this educational and memorable experience possible. We hope it sparked an interest in civic leadership and community involvement for years to come!

The City of Lacombe is reminding residents that electric dirt bikes and similar off-highway vehicles CANNOT be used on roads, sidewalks, pathways, parks, alleys, or other public spaces within city limits.

In Alberta, electric dirt bikes that do not meet vehicle equipment and registration standards are not allowed on public roadways or shared spaces. To be legal on public roadways, a vehicle must meet provincial requirements such as registration, insurance, and equipment standards. Most electric 'dirt' bikes are designed for off-road use and do not meet these requirements.

Understanding the difference - not all electric-powered bikes are the same:
• Bicycles and e-bikes (power-assisted bicycles) are allowed if they meet provincial rules, including having operable pedals and the ability to be powered by the rider
• Electric dirt bikes and similar off-road vehicles do not meet these requirements and are not permitted for use in public spaces

What this means in Lacombe:
• Under the City of Lacombe Traffic Bylaw (Bylaw 506, Section 6.9), off-highway vehicles are NOT permitted to operate within the city, except in very limited circumstances such as loading/unloading or with specific authorization

This means:
✅ You may ride electric dirt bikes on private property with permission or in designated off-highway areas
❌ You may NOT ride them on roads, alleys, sidewalks, pathways, parks, or other public areas
- Using an unregistered or uninsured motor vehicle on public roads may lead to fines, vehicle seizure, licence points, or other penalties

Electric dirt bikes can pose safety concerns in urban areas because they are:
• Capable of high speeds
• Heavier and more powerful than pedal bicycles
• Quiet, making them harder for others to hear
• Not designed for use around traffic or pedestrians

A reminder to riders:
• Operating an off-highway vehicle within city limits is an offence under the Traffic Bylaw and may result in a fine
• Residents are responsible for ensuring the vehicles they operate are permitted and used in appropriate areas
• Operate any type of transportation device safely and wear an approved helmet when riding

Stay Safe!

On May 4, 2026, the Lacombe Police Service initiated an investigation following a report that a student at Ecole Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School, removed two separate long guns from a vehicle and pointed them at another student on school property.

The 16 year old youth was charged with the following charges:
• 87(1) C.C. Pointing a firearm
• 94(2) C.C. Unauthorized possession in motor vehicle
• 86(2) C.C. Careless transportation of firearm

Lacombe, AB - The Lacombe Police Service is investigating an early morning break and enter at the Lacombe Centre Mall that occurred on April 26, 2026.

At approximately 3:13 a.m., police were dispatched following a report of suspicious activity at the rear of the mall, located at 5230 45 Street. A witness observed five unidentified males attempting to gain entry through the rear doors of the building. The suspects were seen fleeing the area in a black van, travelling northbound at a high rate of speed. No license plate was obtained.

While officers were responding, a commercial burglary alarm was also received from a business within the mall, believed to be connected to the same incident.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that suspects had forcibly entered one of the mall units occupied by Lacombe Florist & Gifts. Once inside, the suspects caused significant damage to an adjoining interior wall in an apparent attempt to gain access to the neighboring business, Precious Metals Plus. Despite their efforts, they were unsuccessful in entering that business. Additional damage was also found to an exterior door of Precious Metals Plus, where entry had also been attempted.

No suspects have been identified at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.

If you have any information related to this incident or other criminal activity in the area, please contact the Lacombe Police Service at 403-782-3279 or your local police agency. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip online at www.tipsubmit.com.
