La Ronge & District Chamber of Commerce Faces Board Vacancies and Event Cancellations
The La Ronge & District Chamber of Commerce is announcing ongoing challenges in filling its Executive Board positions following the Annual General Meeting held this past spring. Despite efforts to recruit new members, several positions remain vacant, and additional resignations have occurred since due to work and professional commitments.
As of today, the Chamber has six vacant positions, leaving the organization without enough active Executive members to conduct regular business in accordance with its bylaws.
Earlier this month, the Chamber was unable to host its annual Business Awards Gala, a long-standing event celebrating local business excellence, due to a lack of volunteer and community support to operate the event. The Chamber now faces a similar challenge in proceeding with the installation of community Christmas lights, which traditionally takes place shortly after November 11th once the Veterans’ banners are taken down.
“Unfortunately, with too few board members, we’re unable to move forward with tenders or make formal decisions as required by our bylaws,” said Matthew Maurer, President of the La Ronge & District Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber continues to operate in a limited capacity, but we urgently need new members to step forward to restore full functionality.”
Maurer, who has recently relocated out of town, continues to fulfill his presidential duties remotely but emphasized that he welcomes any member interested in stepping into the President’s role. “If someone from the community is ready and willing to take over, I’d be happy to ensure a smooth transition,” he said.
This is not the first time the Chamber has faced such challenges. In 2012, the La Ronge & District Chamber of Commerce came close to disbanding due to a lack of participation. Thanks to renewed community engagement at the time, the Chamber was successfully revived and continued to serve as an advocate for local businesses. The current Executive hopes to see that same spirit of collaboration return.
The Chamber is calling on local business owners, professionals, and community members who are passionate about economic and community development to consider joining the Executive Board.
