In July 2025, 10 youth and 4 kids of Kangiqsualujjuaq participated in a summer camp at the Kuururjuaq River mouth as part of the Imalirijiit Program. They monitored birds and insects, and sampled water for environmental DNA, helping to monitor local populations and detect new species migrating northward. They also studied fish ecology by collecting samples—some of which were later used to prepare pitsik alongside Elders. Mostly, storytelling and hands-on activities with Elders helped the young participants to reconnect with the land and be better equipped to cope with present and future challenges posed by climate change.

En juillet 2025, 10 jeunes et 4 enfants de Kangiqsualujjuaq ont participé à un camp d'été à l'embouchure de la rivière Kuururjuaq dans le cadre du programme Imalirijiit. Ils ont

observé les oiseaux et les insectes et prélevé des échantillons d'eau pour analyser l'ADN environnemental, ce qui permet de suivre les populations locales et de détecter de nouvelles espèces migrant vers le nord. L’écologie des poissons faisait également partie du programme, dont certains ont ensuite servi à préparer du pitsik en compagnie des aînés. Mais surtout, le camp Imalirijiit permet aux jeunes participants de renouer avec le territoire et de mieux se préparer à relever les défis actuels et futurs posés par les changements climatiques grâce aux récits et aux activités pratiques menés avec les aînés.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change, increasing the risks when traveling on the land. Thanks to the team that installs and maintains beacons along traditional trails, the community of Quaqtaq increases its capacity to stay on track even when visibility conditions are low.

Youth Cadet Program returning to Nunavik in Fall 2026

The Nunavik Police Service is proud to announce the relaunch of the Youth Cadet Program in Kuujjuaq in the fall of 2026.

Designed for Nunavik youth interested in becoming police officers, the program combines policing-related activities with Inuit cultural knowledge and practices. While it isn’t a police training program, it helps participants develop leadership skills, explore careers in policing, and prepare pathways towards becoming police officers.

Beginning this fall, we will welcome youth between the ages of 18 to 20 to take part. The program will expand to younger age groups and to other Nunavik communities in the future.

Retour du programme de cadets au Nunavik à l’automne 2026

Le Service de police du Nunavik est fier d’annoncer la relance du programme de cadets à Kuujjuaq à l’automne 2026.

Ce programme, destiné aux jeunes du Nunavik qui souhaitent devenir policiers, combine des activités liées au travail policier à des connaissances et à des pratiques culturelles inuites. Bien qu’il ne s’agisse pas d’un programme de formation policière, il permet aux participants de développer leurs compétences en leadership, d’explorer les possibilités de carrière dans la police et de se préparer à entreprendre le parcours menant à la profession policière.

Dès cet automne, nous accueillerons des jeunes de 18 à 20 ans qui souhaitent participer au programme. Celui-ci sera élargi, à l’avenir, à des groupes d’âge plus jeunes ainsi qu’à d’autres communautés du Nunavik.
