Happy World Mental Health Day. Every year on October 10th, we continue our conversation around mental health and the ongoing support our community may need.

This year, the theme is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” highlighting the importance of the community and their voices, and how the policies, services, and decisions in our world and local communities can impact and affect these voices.

As part of our work in su***de prevention, we always say how much of a positive impact community-based and person-centred support can be. We can continue listening to the lived experiences of our community and we can also bring those stories to our actions in the community by starting conversations, sharing resources, and connecting each other to help.

Thank you again to Gabby and the team at Becky’s Soda Bar for hosting a fundraiser for WRSPC!

Despite the power outage in the area of Becky’s and the rain storm that followed in the evening yesterday, our teams were still able to offer some delicious and refreshing sodas while contributing to su***de prevention! 🥤🦋

We appreciate the opportunity and support towards su***de prevention and the work we do in our community. We couldn’t this without the support of community organizations like Becky’s and all of the folks within our community contributing to these opportunities.

October is ADHD Awareness Month! Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which impacts a person's ability to regulate their attention and energy. Those with ADHD may experience challenges at school and work, maintaining healthy relationships with others, and developing positive self-esteem, and often experience anxiety and depression as a result.

The negative impacts of ADHD may increase a person's risk for suicidal thoughts or behaviours, particularly if they are unable to access supports and accommodations.

To learn more about ADHD and accommodations that may help, visit the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada (CADDAC): https://caddac.ca/

Be a Spark in Our Community.
5 Days. 1 Cause. Many ways to Spark hope.

The Spark Challenge is more than a fundraising campaign - it is a call to action for all of us to be a spark for ourselves and for others. It is the recognition that su***de prevention often consists of connections and experiences that spark hope, meaning, and belonging.

October 1st is National Seniors Day and this year, it is the 15th anniversary of celebration. This years theme is Rethinking Aging and Challenging Ageism.

Today is important to acknowledge as su***de prevention doesn’t stop at any age. We can help support the wellbeing of older adults by learning and understanding those risk factors, warning signs and protective factors.

This month for Resource Round Up, we have included some resources for support for older adults including:
- Community Support Connections (CSC): https://communitysupportconnections.org/
- Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH): https://ccsmh.ca/

For more local resources and support for older adults, visit our blog and read our October Resource Round Up: https://wrspc.ca/blog/

Today, September 30th, is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

Our team at the Waterloo Region Su***de Prevention Council acknowledges that our work and community efforts are situated on the traditional territory of many Indigenous communities and treaties including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Chonnonton peoples. Our main office is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to Six Nations, which includes six miles on each side of the Grand River.

As our work stems beyond the Waterloo Region, however, we continue to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures and contributions of all Indigenous Peoples and the history of why we recognize National Truth and Reconcilation Day. Today, WRSPC will be wearing Orange alongside our communities to support truth and reconciliation as a symbol of hope and commitment to a better future. We continue to honour these communities and to support and promote local Indigenous organizations including but are not limited to the Crow Shield Lodge, The Healing of Seven Generations, the Willow River Centre, and the Anishnabeg Outreach as part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

Grief after a su***de loss can be an overwhelming experience, with self-care actions taking a pause amongst the stress and overwhelm. Any small act of care - whether that is talking to someone, participating in creative activities, or being active - can help you to take care of yourself while grieving.
