Notice for Glenburnie residents:

You may notice a slight “rotten egg” or natural gas odour between June 22 and June 25. This is due to planned work at the City Gate Natural Gas Regulating Station, where we will be replacing an odorant tank.

Mercaptan is added to natural gas to give it its distinct smell so that leaks can be easily detected. During this work, a small amount of residual odour may be noticeable.

There is no risk to public health or safety.

To help reduce odours, we will use charcoal filters and other control measures throughout the work.

If you ever suspect a natural gas leak, contact your gas provider, Enbridge, or call 9-1-1.

Did you know that Southeast Public Health advises against swimming on public beaches for 24-48 hours after heavy rains?

☔ Heavy rain can wash pollutants such as animal waste and debris from streets and yards into our waterways, increasing bacterial levels. Also, while Kingston's combined sewer system usually handles rainwater and sewage effectively, heavy rain can sometimes overwhelm it, causing sewer overflows.

Know before you go! Before recreational use, confirm the water quality status at https://bit.ly/4vtMo2z.

For real-time sewer overflow information, check our map at https://utilitieskingston.com/Wastewater/SewerOverflow/Map.

Our hydrant inspection and flow rating program helps ensure readiness for emergencies. 🚒💦

Hydrant inspections are crucial for fire protection. Our licensed water distribution operators check mechanical parts for proper operation, assess the overall condition of each hydrant, and perform flushing and flow rating. Once rated, hydrants are colour-coded blue, green, orange, or red to indicate their flow rates to firefighters!

What can you expect during hydrant flushing season? 💧

👉 Lower water pressure: temporary and typically returns quickly

👉 Discoloured water: flushing can stir up sediment, but your water remains safe to use

If your water looks discoloured, simply run the cold tap closest to your water meter for a few minutes until it clears.

🪁 The best place for a kite? Open skies, far from power lines!

As kite season takes off, remember to fly kites well away from power lines and electrical equipment. A kite, string, or tail that comes into contact with the electrical system can create safety hazards and may even cause power outages, affecting homes and businesses.

If your kite becomes tangled in a power line:
⚠️ Never try to retrieve it yourself.
⚠️ Stay clear of the area.
📞 Contact your local utility for assistance.

The best place to fly a kite is a wide-open field, far from overhead power lines. A little extra space helps keep everyone safe and the lights on for your community.
