Eastern Ontario Cheese Tour: Empire Cheese in Campbellford, ON

The Empire still reigns in Northumberland Country

At our friend Kevin's recommendation, we made a road trip to metropolis of Campbellford for a quick store tour of the area-famous Empire Cheese Factory. Kevin is very loyal to the place, and feels its one of the best in Canada. And I have to admit, after trying their cheeses, it's hard to argue. Located just south of Cambellford on Highway 8, it's about an 7 minute drive from downtown to the countryside store. (From the bridge travelling east, you'll see the large church at the top of the hill. Turn right there.)

The interesting thing when you walk into the Empire shop is the space, and the straight forward selling of cheese. They leave a lot of area for the customer to roam around in their large cheese fridges, which makes it easy to find the cheese you want without any pressure. The ladies were helpful and gave me the recommendations that were needed, and we settled in with a 4 year old, and extra old and medium marble. If you ask them straight out, they'll show you what they made best this year, which I highly recommend you doing.

Though their well aged cheddar is good, the key to Empire is it's consistency with it's traditional Canadian cheeses from mild to extra old. Each one of them is excellent in their own right, and many have won awards throughout the country. They even specialize within these traditional cheese classes to offer cheese like their superb medium marble, one of my now favorites and I highly recommend it for things like road trips. As many of you know, a good cheese is essential to a good Currie-Pugi road trip.

The extra old was also superb, and one of the best I've tried in Canada, but I found myself going back to the medium marble, which pretty much signifies how Empire survived to be the only independent cheese manufacturer in Northumberland County. I have found the consistency and tastiness of their medium and mild cheeses over the years to be excellent, even though the old and extra old are what their known for. You cannot go wrong with any of these cheeses, and their highly sought fresh curds, which keeps Empire the king in the entire area.

If your anywhere near the Campbellford area, Empire is a must for any real cheese fan.

Special side trip tip: The board at the Kingston Cheese Lovers Society would highly recommend a stop to the Ming Star Buffet in downtown Campbellford, which has the best Chinese food we've tasted in the whole area. What it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up in quality, with great service too - especially from our waitress Jessica. As a special note to dairy lovers, they have the best ice cream I've tasted at a Chinese Buffet by far, which ends off the evening just perfectly.

Here is something easy to make and it only takes 20 minutes. You can use Fontina cheese or you can use a semi soft cheese from the Gunn's Hill Cheese Company called the Canadian. It is really good smile emoticon.

Eastern Ontario Dairy Tour: LIMESTONE ORGANIC CREAMERY

FINALLY! REAL CHOCOLATE MILK (ORGANIC, NO LESS!)

Driving down beautiful Sydenham Road after visiting our friends Rob and Rob at Snug Harbour Resort, the Prez spotted the Limestone Organic Creamery building between Railton and Glenburnie. He had seen their products at the Memorial Centre Market and felt we needed to investigate it further. There was certainly no objection on my part.

It's a new building, but as you walk in, you feel transported into their nostalgic charm. The decor is early 20th century rustic, and the showroom is spacious and airy, with the feel of an old farm house. This place has dedicated itself to selling both organic and locally based products and I commend them for that.

Through the front door, the Creamery has a beautiful long counter to the left with local cheeses for tasting (always a hit with the society), local scones and bread, and Slickers ice cream from Bloomfield, ON at the front. On the right there's a long fridge with large variety of local cheeses and products, and beautiful milk bottles full of their milk products after that. The Prez choose Bush Garden Farmstead Cheese and a bottle of the stores very own chocolate milk. The cheese is a favorite product of the Prez and we'll write about that later.

But the real star here today was the chocolate milk. I've been searching for many years in the Kingston area for New England style creamy chocolate milk. Well this place has it, but it may be even better than that. This is no 1% milk with chocolate paste that has taken over in the last decade. This is a 3.8% creamy milk with all organic milk, cocoa and sugar.

Now some of you may say, that's just too much. My thought to that is: How much creamy ingredients does ice cream have?

Happily, this is like drinking a milk shake with organic products. And it tastes heavenly. It's rich and dreamy but still tastes light and refreshing being the wonderful organic milk it is. Just a beautiful treat on a hot summer's day. Just make sure you share it with a friend. smile emoticon Because that's how we got this post. LOL
