If you have missed the awesome perfume sale at the Bazaar, the Almatar family will be selling again tomorrow (Thursday) at Queen's Arc from 5-9! So come down, get your scent, get to know your neighbors and support local refugees!

After fleeing Syria, Mr. Almatar set up a perfume business in Lebanon for 4 years. His children, Mohamed Saber and Abdulmalek, were also an integral part of the family business, learning the craft at a young age and they are now experts at assembling perfume. The family business, GOLD MIST Perfumes, offers a great variety of perfumes and unique bottle designs to sell.

In an interview with Queen's Law Refugee Support Program, they said:

“One of the best things about being in Canada is the fact that we can build a life here. Everywhere else has been temporary. But this is it. Canada is it. Now we can pursue the stability we always dreamed about.”

“We just hope for all the Syrian people to be able to pursue what they love without fearing of it being destroyed the next day. We hope for the situation there to be conducive to that”
The Almatar family will have a table at the arc offering a wide range of perfumes. You will be able to sample until you find your new scent. Let GOLD MIST Perfumes help you find the new name for your personal style!

Seven students, representing the QL chapter of CARL (Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers), visited Parliament Hill yesterday to lobby Ministers of Parliament on refugee and immigration law issues: Alyssa Moses, Tiffany Huynh, Yamen Fadel, Kali Larsen, Tina Gougoushvili, Tanya Gill and Kristina Beer.

After a full Sunday of lobbying training, including a keynote by Alex Neve the Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada, we met with MPs on Monday, and asked them to (1) remove several statutory bars to humanitarian and compassionate applications under IRPA and (2) create an external, independent and binding oversight body for the Canadian Border Services Agency.

We had extremely productive meetings with these MPs and many were supportive of our position on these issues. Due to our lobbying, some MPs committed to introducing the issues within Standing Committees and with the Hon. Minister Hussen (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship) and the Hon. Minister Goodale (Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness).

"I’ve met so many who have lost so much. But they never lose their dreams for their children or their desire to better our world. They ask for little in return – only our support in their time of greatest need" — UN Secretary-General, António Guterres

On World Refugee Day, held every year on June 20th, we commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees. This year, World Refugee Day also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee.

On April 3rd, Queen's Law Refugee Support Program was privileged to accept the Law Students' Society Professional Excellence Award.

This award is presented annually to an organized group of law students who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has best demonstrated initiative, contribution, participation and involvement in activities and events that promote educational and professional excellence.

We're so grateful for the contributions from: the innumerable Queen's Law students who signed letters and volunteered their valuable time to do "24 hours" of research, Professor Sharry Aiken, Professor Art Cockfield, and Professor Darryl Robinson who helped host our events, and to the larger Kingston community who made some truly generous donations to both the donation depot and our private sponsorship fundraiser.

And of course we couldn't have done it without our executive team of: Caileigh Gruner, Stephanie Bishop, Yamen Fadel, Meg CF, Tiffany Huynh, Kanwar Dhaliwal, Liz Guilbault, Kali Larsen, Alyssa Indira, Michelle Soucy and Ana Toma.

We hope you'll join us next year in advocating for refugee rights and supporting our local refugee community!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to our Learn-In on Trump's executive order on immigration.
