Today marked the final Rewire session at St. Lawrence Youth Association, and it was a powerful way to wrap up this group.

We asked what words come to mind when you hear the word “consent”? From there the youth worked to build their own definition. What they came up with from there was powerful.
“Consent is a clear and specified boundary, spoken out loud, while uninfluenced, sober, and informed.”

We spent time reflecting on what it means to pause in the moment—especially when emotions are high—and how that pause can change the outcome of a conversation or conflict. One of the biggest takeaways: awareness creates choice. When youth understand what’s happening internally, they’re better equipped to respond instead of react.

What stood out most was the level of honesty in the room. These conversations aren’t always easy, but the willingness to engage, reflect, and challenge old patterns speaks volumes.

This is what prevention looks like—building skills early that support healthier relationships for life.

Our staff had an incredible experience delivering the 2nd session of Rewire at the St. Lawrence Youth Association’s Sundance Facility!

The youth were highly engaged, thoughtful, and open throughout the session—especially during our discussions on Gottman’s “4 Horsemen.” They brought energy, honesty, and meaningful questions that made the conversations truly impactful.

Programs like Rewire are most effective when participants show up with curiosity and a willingness to reflect, and this group did exactly that. A huge thank you to the team at St. Lawrence Youth Association for the warm welcome and for creating such a supportive environment for growth.
Looking forward to continuing this important work together! 💡👏

📢Notice to the Community📢
The John Howard Society of Kingston and District Leeds and Grenville office is no longer responsible for encampment outreach in Leeds and Grenville. This funding is now internalized at the counties.
If you encounter individuals living in encampments who may need support, or if you notice signs of encampments in your area, please be aware that the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville will now be responding to all encampment-related concerns.

As the weather warms up, you may begin to notice encampments in parts of our communities.

This is not unusual. When indoor options are unavailable or individuals are not yet ready to access them, some people find shelter in outdoor spaces.

Our outreach team is aware this is happening and is actively working to connect with individuals living in encampments to discuss available options.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact [email protected]

We appreciate your understanding as we continue this work with a focus on respect, safety, and connection to supports.
