King-Vaughan Greens

King-Vaughan Greens Green Party policies result in an improved quality of life for all of us, our children, and many generations of Canadians to come.

An improved quality of life is a direct result of policies based on objective and scientific knowledge. That is, when policies are based on truth, and not when "truth" is based on policy. The best leaders and government policies have a vision of the country long into the future, not just to the next election. That is best leadership, that is good government, and Canadians deserve it.

Listen to Ms May on this one. She knows what she is talking about. I would only add that you look up the spill in Kalamazo, Michigan which is one of the largest and the most costly fossil fuel spill on American soil in its history. All while having Enbridge Gas monitoring for leaks. The result has been the National Transportation Safety Board recommending that where oil is listed in regulations and laws, governments in the USA must not equate that to diluted bitumen. Diluent is physically erosive because there is still some ‘sand’ in it, and it is chemically corrosive, unlike oil. The river is ruined, and the off-gassing of the diluent caused illness. Diluent is flammable as well as toxic. Some bitumen remains today at the river bottom which has been dredged, ruining the ecosystem. For years cottagers were not permitted to use their cottages and fish have yet to return. PS the diluent is imported by the USA’s refineries. This why if you recall the Keystone pipeline was to be a double pipeline, as if the case usually when bitumen involved. The diluent is piped to the tar sands and then the dilbit is pumped back in the opposite direction. Diluent is highly toxic and flammable as Ms May points out.

Shifting baseline syndrome (SBS) is what happens when we forget how vibrant the natural world used to be. Each generation grows up with a more depleted environment and calls it “normal,” simply because it’s all they’ve ever known.

Think about walking through a park and thinking, “This seems healthy.” But maybe 30 years ago that same park had twice as many birds, wildflowers, or insects. If you never saw that version, you don’t feel the loss — and that quiet forgetting becomes the new baseline. Over time, we start accepting degraded ecosystems as normal.

Researchers warn that this shift lowers our expectations, increases our tolerance for decline, and reduces our urgency to protect what’s left.

What helps:

Intergenerational conversations that reconnect us with what nature used to be.

Direct experiences with nature that sharpen our awareness of change.

Remembering (knowing) the past is the first step to restoring the future.

When housing is treated as a way to make corporations rich instead of a way to keep people housed, our communities suffer.

“Human rights are under full-scale attack around the world. It's happening in plain sight and often led by those with the greatest power.

But human rights are not a slogan for good times. They are a duty at all times.

We must stand up for them even when it is difficult and costly.

Especially then.”

— UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Ending our economic model away from GDP, that is to a post-growth economy, such as a de-growth economy……. One not based on consumption and profit for a few. Indigenous Canadians know better and we need to learn from their traditions and teachings.

Cutting planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions doesn’t just save humanity from the effects of climate change, it delivers immediate health benefits.

Climate action policies cut air pollution - which currently contributes to around 8 million premature deaths each year - while also reducing the risks of extreme heat, floods and the spread of disease.

Protecting nature and accelerating the transition to clean energy creates cleaner air, safer water and more resilient communities— making our planet healthier for people now and for generations to come: https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/news/spotlight-climate-action
