Stories are our collective memory, and Indigenous Peoples in this area have used the stars to tell stories for thousands of years. Today, as we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, we’d like to thank the elders and knowledge carriers who have shared these star stories with us, and who are preserving these memories for future generations.

Today’s post comes from Will Morin, Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Sudbury and Bruce Waters, former educator at the McLaughlin Planetarium and founder of the Killarney Provincial Park Observatory. It’s time we learn the astronomical traditions of the diverse Indigenous cult...

June is here, bringing with it the arrival of luna moths! 🦋

The luna moth’s striking green wings with a brown edge help it blend in among tree leaves. Disguised as a leafy twig, luna moths can be tricky to spot 🌿

Have you ever seen a luna moth? 🔎

This past Saturday, June 13th, was Killarney Provincial Park’s 28th annual Spring Loon Count.

We surveyed 13 lakes and saw 23 loons!🎉

Thank you to the amazing group of volunteers and Killarney staff that came together in the rain to count Killarney's loons!

We also want to thank Killarney Outfitters for graciously donating canoe rentals for the day to Spring Loon Count volunteers. 🛶

And a big thank you to the Friends of Killarney for the exceptionally cute and yummy loon cookies! 🍪

Our next Loon count is on August 8th, 2026.

A lot is left to chance when you’re planning a summer camping trip. You can’t always ensure sunny weather, quiet car rides, or calm paddling waters.

However one thing is certain if you’re heading into the outdoors, you’re definitely going to encounter the pesky buzz of Ontario’s biting insects!

Want to keep the bugs at bay?
🌿 Don't forget to pack the insect repellent. There are lots of options, including eco-friendly and DEET-free, for you to pick from.
🧥 Wear a bug net or clothing with lots of coverage. Long sleeves and pants usually make it harder for biting insects to find skin to bite.
🔥 Have a campfire! The smoke from your campfire will help keep the bugs away. Please be sure to check our alerts page for fire bans before striking a match!
