Chrysalis House Association

At Chrysalis House, we provide transitional shelter, a 24-hour support line, and outreach services in a non-judgmental, empowering environment.

We serve women and their children fleeing various forms of abuse in West Hants, Kings, and Annapolis Counties. Chrysalis House provides safe shelter, support and counseling to abused women and their children. We work with individuals, organization and businesses in our community to end violence against women. Chrysalis House is located in Kentville, Nova Scotia. We serve the
communities of Kings,

Annapolis, and Hants County. Our shelter operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year. There are absolutely NO FEES for service to women and their children who seek our shelter for help. Public education and community development are also important elements of our Association.

When people ask, “Why didn’t they just leave?”
They’re missing what survival actually requires.

For many survivors, choices are rooted in safety, not what looks “logical” from the outside.

This can look like:
• hypervigilance
• survival-based decisions
• fear of escalation
• the lasting impact of chronic stress on the brain

This beautiful new play space at Chrysalis House came to life thanks to generous community supporters through Project Renew, along with extra fundraising efforts from caring local groups and individuals who wanted to help create something truly special.

Not all healing happens through words.

Sometimes healing looks like:
🎨 paint on hands,
✍️ colours on paper,
🌿 quiet moments creating something that didn’t exist before.

For many survivors, art is more than art.
💜It’s a release.
💜A way to process.
💜A way to breathe.
💜A way to tell a story that’s too hard to say out loud.

We recently added a land acknowledgement to our website as one small step in our ongoing commitment to learning, listening, and reflecting on how we can offer more inclusive and culturally safe support.

Acknowledging the land is only the beginning.

As an organization supporting women and children, we know that safety, trust, and access to support are not experienced equally, and that matters.

A land acknowledgement is a way of recognizing the land we live and work on, and the Mi’kmaq peoples, including Two-Spirit folks, who have cared for it since time immemorial. It is also a reminder that the impacts of colonialism are still present today.

This responsibility is something we will carry forward in how we show up in this work.💜

Coercive control is about power, not love.
It can look like controlling where you go, who you see, your phone, or your money. Even without physical violence, it’s abuse.
