Thank you for your generous support to this year’s Holiday Hamper Program. A note of gratitude from one family ❤️. To our community,

“We’re writing with full hearts to say thank you. Because of your kindness, we were able to spend Christmas in safety after leaving violence. You helped us find warmth, comfort, and a sense of dignity at a time when everything felt uncertain.”

“Your support reminded us that we are not alone—and that new beginnings are possible. From our family to yours, thank you for holding us up when we needed it most.”

With deep gratitude,
A family rebuilding in safety.

This year has been unimaginably heavy for our communities. Frontline workers, friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children—so many have carried the grief of losing someone to femicide, while still pushing forward in advocacy, support, justice, and healing. The weight of that loss can feel impossible.
To offer a moment of emotional reset for everyone who has been deeply affected, we are hosting this year’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women through our social media platform. As I created this post, I felt the enormity of how many photos and stories I wanted to honour—not just the tragedies themselves, but the lives, the relationships, and the people forever changed in their wake.
This space is for you.
A safe place to share a memory, a picture, a poem, a link to an action—anything you want to offer in honour of someone whose life was stolen by femicide. Your story matters. Your grief matters. There are invisible victims in every tragedy, and this is a place to acknowledge all of you.

Supporting survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, sexual assault and child abuse through our downtown Kelowna location and as part of the multi-disciplinary team at the Kelowna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. We provide specialized victim services and sexual assault counselling for children, youth and adults in our Central Okanagan Community. Last year we supported over 1600 community members impacted by domestic abuse. We couldn't do this without your support! This year, we are asking for donations of gift cards to help our families take part in some of their holiday traditions and celebrations - allowing them the autonomy to provide for their children and hopefully get them something special - at a time when they have already lost so much and faced with many uncertainties. We appreciate all your support! Thank you! Chantal Banman, Executive Director

Our team is heartbroken by the recent intimate partner violence (IPV) fatality in our community.

We extend our deepest condolences to Bailey McCourt’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic loss.

This devastating event is a stark reminder that gender-based violence is a crisis in our region, and across BC.

IPV is not rare. In Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner approximately every 6 days.

Locally, we are seeing rising rates of IPV, and the consequences continue to be fatal.

As a front-line service organization, we are calling for urgent and coordinated action:

👉Formal recognition of gender-based violence as an epidemic,

👉Increased investment in prevention, survivor safety planning, and support services

👉Stronger systems of accountability and coordinated community response

Our team walks beside survivors every day - navigating the many barriers they face: lack of safe and affordable housing; escalating violence; lengthy and retraumatizing court processes; the arrest and release of violent offenders awaiting trial; and repeated breaches of court-ordered conditions with few consequences.

These are not isolated issues. They reflect systemic underfunding, gaps in coordination, and an urgent need for reform.

We call on all levels of government and community partners to act swiftly and boldly. This violence is preventable - and no more lives should be lost.

If you or someone you know is experiencing IPV, please know that you are not alone. Confidential, compassionate support is available through our organization and others across the province. 💜

Online gender-based violence, also called 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, involves using technology to harm someone, and can be extremely damaging as it can reach victims 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. According to the United Nations, cyberviolence worldwide is 𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Cyberviolence involves using technology to 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀, 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁, 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗰𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲, 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 or 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻.

It can happen through a variety of tech & digital platforms, and can include 𝗱𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 , and 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗻 . (𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦)

If you’re a victim of online GBV, you can take multiple actions, including 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 directly through the app/online platform where the abuse is taking place, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲, and of course, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 for resources & support.

Happy Canada Day from our team here at Elizabeth Fry. 🇨🇦 Today, we celebrate the diversity & resilience that make Canada a place that we call home & reflect on the values that bind us ~ equity, justice, and community.

At EFry, we are committed to creating a safer, more inclusive Canada for everyone ~ especially for those who have experienced intimate partner & sexual violence, and our community’s most vulnerable members.

We acknowledge that true celebration also means reconciliation ~ recognizing the painful truths of our shared history, honouring Indigenous communities, and standing in solidarity with those still fighting for justice.

While our office is closed today in observation of Canada Day, if you are in need of support services during our closure, please call 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗕𝗖: 𝟭-𝟴𝟬𝟬-𝟱𝟲𝟯-𝟬𝟴𝟬𝟴 , 𝟮𝟰/𝟳 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝟮𝟱𝟬-𝟳𝟲𝟯-𝟭𝟬𝟰𝟬 , and as always, 𝟵𝟭𝟭 if you are in immediate danger.

We wish you all a safe & healthy Canada Day. 🇨🇦

It’s also a moment to acknowledge the systemic inequalities that persist.

👉Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people face disproportionately high rates of violence — in fact, they are 𝟯 𝘁𝗼 𝟱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 to experience sexual violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) than non-Indigenous women in Canada.

Our organization is committed to supporting survivors of IPV and sexual violence ~ and we recognize that reconciliation includes standing with Indigenous communities in the fight for safety, justice, and healing.

We’re so grateful to the for their continued support of survivors of sexual violence in our community.💜

We’ve just been approved for $𝟭𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 in funding to support our 𝗔𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 ~ the only specialized counselling service for adult survivors of sexual violence in the Central Okanagan.

This vital program offers 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮-𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 to women, men, and LGBTQIA2S+ individuals who have experienced 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹/𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 sexual abuse.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 ~ and we couldn’t do it without the support of partners like the City of Kelowna.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀 and helping us continue this critical healing service. 💜
