Last week, an Indigenous-led ceremony and land walk took place at the location of the new Outdoor Education and Indigenous Centre near Archie Stouffer ES. Elders, Knowledge Holders, community members, and representatives from both the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee (IEAC)—which includes the Indigenous Student Success Team—and the Outdoor Education Committee were in attendance, as were trustees not on one of those committees and Board staff involved with the project. Invitations for this day were also extended to Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Alderville First Nation, Georgina Island First Nation, Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, and Beausoleil First Nation. It was a beautiful day and very meaningful.

On March 24 all the high schools in TLDSB sent students to IE Weldon to compete in the Skills Ontario Qualifiers, for the chance to go to the Provincials. There were 11 categories represented, from Mechanical CAD to 4 carpentry categories and plumbing, electrical, auto and heavy equipment service, and landscaping. With only 6 hours to complete the assigned project, the results were amazing. Not all categories are eligible to move on to the Provincial competition, but I look forward to cheering on those who do. Kudos to all of the teachers and administrators who teach, encourage, mentor and devote endless hours to preparing these young people. Kudos too to the teachers who enlist the local trades to donate prizes for the first, second and third place competitors (over $12,000 in tools, and other prizes were given away). On to the Provincials on May 4 and 5. Good luck everyone!

We have watched democracy erode around the world. Please don't let it happen in Ontario. First, let me say that Trillium Lakelands DSB has had a balanced budget for the past 4 years; has found the money to fund new Special Education programmes; has improved EQAO scores across the board; has fiscally responsible Trustees who are involved in their communities. The Minister of Education has taken over 7 school boards in Ontario for a variety of reasons (some quite legitimate) including Trustee financial irresponsibility. The Minister is threatening to eliminate all public Trustees in the province (YOUR democratically elected representative on the school Board) because he is painting all Trustees with the same brush. Notably, he CANNOT eliminate Catholic or French school board Trustees due to constitutional issues. If you believe that collecting taxes to operate schools without having a say in how they are used is okay, then do nothing. If you see the value in having a local representative on the school Board, then contact your local MPP (Laurie Scott for CKL and Haliburton, Graydon Smith for Muskoka) and tell them so. You can also urge your local council to support the maintenance of the Trustee role. Democracy dies in darkness. Shine a light.

And last, but not least, in a very busy month was the Woodville Christmas concert on December 17. another talented and enthusiastic set of performances, well-attended even in the middle of the day. The dedication and time that is put in by students and staff to prepare for these concerts cannot be understated, and my hat is off to all of them. I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday, and is ready for more "stuff" in the New Year. I'm looking forward to being there!

Lady Mackenzie PS was next with their snowflake extravaganza on December 16. Students and staff showed their talent, enthusiasm and support, as did the Lions Club, who assisted with the basket raffle. Another huge community turnout and enough holiday spirit to make Santa's sleigh fly for 1,000 years (if you're a fan of ELF)!

Next on the agenda was a pancake breakfast with Santa at Dr. George Hall in Little Britain. Enthusiastic caroling in the foyer, followed by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus (and if you thought the caroling was enthusiastic, you should have heard the welcome Santa got!) and then a pancake breakfast hosted by the parent council. The little ones even got to visit with Santa. There were a lot of smiles on faces that day.

As we get ready to ring in the New Year in our schools, let's look back to the Christmas and holiday celebrations that took place in December. The kick off was at Ridgewood Public School on December 9. Their holiday concert was brimming with talent in both the students and in the staff. a true community event (as always!) the gym was full and the audience was appreciative. Well done RPS!

Still catching up on November, and two events at Woodville ES that month. First was the Remembrance Day assembly, very capably organized by EA Mr. Barton. The Legion provided a colour guard, wreaths were laid, the students were quiet and respectful and the weather co-operated (thankfully, as it was held outdoors). Woodville ES will make sure we remember.
The second event was just last week. Woodville held its first awards assembly for the year. Students in each class were recognized for 4 character traits (sometimes more than one student in a class). In addition, one or two students in each class were recognized for outstanding effort with a "Wolf Howl" award. The surprise on some of the faces was priceless! Well done everyone.

A bit of catch-up (not ketchup!) for the month of November. On the 11th, Lady Mackenzie PS had their usual well-attended Remembrance Day assembly. The colour guard from the Woodville Legion was there to open and close the assembly. Students of all ages presenting skits, poems and music to remind all all present why we remember our veterans. I was impressed with the attention students paid throughout. At 11 a.m. several classes proceeded to the Kirkfield Cenotaph to participate in the laying of the wreaths with the Legion and members of the community. Their presence was very much appreciated and commented on. Let us always remember.
