Secwepemc Fisheries Commission is the fisheries department of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council

SFC is a progressive First Nations fisheries body that works within the mandate of Shuswap Nation Tribal Council (SNTC) communities and Tribal Chiefs. We support the work of our communities to provide stewardship for the fisheries in their territories and to assert their traditional fisheries rights within a co-management framework. This is accomplished as they are building capacity for self-government.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip has asked that we “please broadcast far and wide” our message of tribute and condolence for the loss of Amshen Joan Phillip (Sunset: August 28, 2026.) She will be deeply missed:

Dear Grand Chief Stewart Phillip,

As leadership representatives of the Secwépemc, Syilx Okanagan, and Ktunaxa Nations on behalf of Bringing the Salmon Home: The Columbia River Salmon Reintroduction Initiative, we offer our deepest sympathies and solidarity to you and your family as we join in mourning the passing of Amshen Joan Phillip.

We honour Joan’s inspiring life and enduring legacy as an outstanding and fearless leader.

She always stood up with and for her people and the common good, no matter the personal cost.

She led from the heart, with dignity, grace, and fierce strength and commitment.

Our world is better because of Amshen Joan Phillip’s contributions.

Through her unrelenting efforts, she reinforced our collective vision: together we can ensure clean water, healthy lands, and ever-returning salmon, and uphold rights and unity amongst our peoples.

The Scotch Creek sockeye enumeration fence is ready for another season! 🐟

SFC staff recently joined Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw to help install the fence in preparation for the returning Early Summer sockeye.

Operated annually since 1994, the fence allows crews to count sockeye as they move upstream and collect important information about the timing, abundance, and health of the run. This long-term monitoring supports salmon management while helping protect a population that remains culturally and ecologically important to Secwépemc communities.

🐟 Skeetchestn Fish Camp 2026

SFC staff joined Skeetchestn Fish Camp for a day of hands-on learning, supporting camp activities, and participating in traditional fish processing.

Our day included fish cleaning and filleting, preparing and hanging traditional dried fish, setting up drying racks, and learning about traditional tool making with Terry Denault (Menips).

We are grateful for the opportunity to spend time alongside community members, lend a hand, and learn from the knowledge and teachings shared throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone at Skeetchestn Fish Camp for welcoming us and allowing us to be part of this experience. ❤️🐟
