Today we are veryyyyyy excited to be hosting a challenge station for Speak Up Self-Advocacy Awareness (SUSA)'s An Amazing Race for Inclusion this year.

We cannot wait to meet the racers that will be visiting our office to participate in a sensory overwhelm challenge. Experiencing sensory overload is a common symptom for many brain injury survivors. We always appreciate partnering with other organizations that are working to make the world a more respectful place for people with disabilities.

Check it out and get involved yourself at Race for Inclusion: https://www.tourismkamloops.com/events/an-amazing-race-to-inclusion

Jail time for KBIA as today is the Kamloops Regional Correctional Center Community Resource Fair.

We are so grateful to our partners at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Center for inviting us again this year to their resource fair. We had a great time last year meeting the inmates and staff.

As it's suspected that up to 80% of people incarcerated have a brain injury Shay our educational coordinator has been working closely with the men within the facility over the past few months. She enjoys seeing so many community organizations at the fair ensuring that the inmates are aware of what is available to them upon release.

Guneet is starting up a group counselling class called Emotional Management! This four week class is to help survivors focus on building awareness of their emotions, understanding, and learning practical skills to management them.

Brain injuries often cause significant, long-lasting challenges with emotional management, frequently leading to irritability, anger, and reduced control over emotions due to frontal lobe damage.

All of our classes and programs at KBIA are 100% free... thanks to all the Turtle Support and other donations we can put on cool programs like this to help brain injury survivors.

Today we were happy to join RIH again for their Mental Health and Addiction fair.

Mental health challenges and addiction can be closely linked to brain injury as up to 20% of traumatic brain injury survivors develop a new substance use issue within the 1st year of their injury. In addition, some studies indicate that up to 77% of of traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors are diagnosed with a mental health condition within the first year post-injury.

We are so grateful to all of the health care practitioners we meet at this event who have either supported survivors, or experienced their own brain injury and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

What a day.

We seriously couldn’t have asked for better weather, a better crowd, or a better way to bring the community together. From the free BBQ by Kal Tire to the turtle races, the bike rodeo, and everything in between… it was one of those days you just don’t want to end.

Thank you to everyone who came out, bought tickets, cheered on their turtles, and made this event what it was. The energy was incredible.

A huge thank you to our sponsors and every single volunteer who helped make this happen. These events don’t run without you, and we’re so grateful.

And of course… congratulations to our winners
