🌲 Wildfire mitigation work near Pine Ridge

You may notice crews on a District-owned parcel near Pine Ridge over the coming weeks. The BC Wildfire Service is doing wildfire mitigation work to help reduce fire risk, and we are glad to support it.

Here is what to know:
🪓 Crews are hand clearing brush and removing ladder fuels, the smaller trees and low branches that let fire climb into the treetops
🌿 The branches will be gathered into piles within the work area
📅 The work will happen gradually through the summer as crews are available
🤝 Some of it is interagency cooperation, so you may see more than one crew on site
🔥 No burning is happening right now. The piles are planned for safe, controlled burning over the winter, the same as we did on 12th Avenue.

This kind of work makes our community more resilient heading into wildfire season.

Wildfire season is here, and the risks aren’t always obvious. Messy gutters look untidy, but more importantly, those dry leaves and debris are the perfect kindling for flying embers.

🌸 June's Plant of the Month is Rosy Pussytoes (Antennaria rosea), and it might be the hardest-working little plant in a FireSmart garden.

This charming, low-growing perennial forms a dense silvery-green mat that lasts year-round, making it an excellent groundcover and a great alternative to bark mulch in your intermediate zone. Come late spring and early summer, it puts on a show of soft pink blooms that pollinators love. Deer, put off by its fuzzy leaves, tend to leave it alone.

A few reasons to love it:
🌿 Fire-resistant and extremely cold hardy
☀️ Thrives in sunny, dry conditions, perfect for a xeriscape garden
🐝 Supports bees and butterflies
🏡 Spreads to form living mulch, reducing wildfire risk around your home

Leaves stay low at around 5 cm, with flowers reaching up to 40 cm in height. It's a small plant that does a big job.
